Class of 2015 - Mailbox Stalkers Club

TWE - QNW

I've been following this site for weeks like many other hundreds if not thousands of moms and dads across America. Before I go any further, I must say THANK YOU to all of you regulars who have contributed over the past month. I have learned so much. TWA - you are quite an inspiration to us all - thank you.
My son (I believe you refer to them as 'DS') got his TWE on April 1st, the day after we left for Spring Break in Florida. We called Mom back in Indiana who is picking up our mail for us if anything came in from the AFA. She said 'Yes' and we asked if it was a big or small envelope and she said small. We knew what that meant. I called the Admissions office to confirm it was a QNV letter. I asked about the possibility of getting a late call if someone declines an appointment and the counselor I spoke with told me the Academy isn't planning on backfilling declined appointments as a way of getting their numbers down.
Broke the news to my DS yesterday. He is very disappointed to say the least, but fortunately has a decent plan B (type 2 ROTC scholarship to Miami-OH). We had a long conversation and he's doing a lot of processing now. Today he mentioned that he thinks he'll reapply. It's hard for him to accept that he is good enough to get in but there just wasn't room. I'm thankful we have a few more days of vacation for him to process before facing family and friends back home.
We too believe that God has a plan and we're doing our best to trust Him the best we know how.
All the best to you that got a BFE - you have reason to be proud. Thank you for choosing to serve!
A pround dad from Indiana.

Even though DS has accepted an appointment, we're still working full bore on Plan B. When he was younger, the emergency room workers knew him by sight so we don't want to take any chances.

1993A10 : Please don't go there! Also my understanding is that you would simply become a medical turnback and enter with the next class.

My understanding is this only happens if you are hurt during Basic. If you are hurt before you get there or fall getting off the bus you are out of luck and start the whole process over.

USAFA QNV Parent Pain (tell me about it) - 1 year of non stop go go go preparation by your kid...........then 1 year of paper paper paper, incoming mail for Plan B-C-D...... Now it is April. Total mind shift. Paper paper paper for finish up alternative plans and check off all the list. Tons of homework, keeping up grades, usually going full tilt boogie in varsity in some sport. Holding off the party crowds with one hand, standing strong. Then boom! Graduation and prom coming up. Keeping up workouts. Time moving too fast. Start buying Plan B college T-shirts, reading up on catalogs. Shazbot! Then June/July here-reapply for USAFA. Get that CFA done. Get those transcripts ordered in May. Talk to those teachers and rec letters for over summer. Try to have a spring break where you don't kill yourself, twist an ankle, tear up an ACL.

Thank you for being organized!!! You just gave us our to-do list, lol!:yllol:

Hi FlyerDreamer,

I'm trying to keep it "real", know what I mean? There is a lot of humor in every day life (think Seinfield! Modern Family! Golden Girls!) if you just look up from all the aggravation and t-r-y to have a chuckle.

No chuckling in our house after the TWE, and I truly thought we were heading for a true meltdown, but it did not happen. I was so incredibly shocked to see my son recover this past week, not only from the TWE but one piece of bad news after another fell into his lap in one week.

Well guess what buckeroos? It's week 2 and all is well. No one went off the cliff, no one is in therapy, no one is stocking up on Miller Lite, no one is wearing all black and wailing, meteorites are not dropping out of the sky on our house, everyone is healthy, the sun is shining, the yard needs mowing, and guacamole and chips still taste good.

So, friend, I'll see you over in the Reapplying Thread very soon. I need to rest up this week and get my beauty rest (and mow the blasted yard). My favorite motto of all time...

SOMETIMES THE ONLY WAY OUT IS........THROUGH..........THROUGH THE FIRE........TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.

Be strong. Be happy. Be good to others. Be good to yourself. Stop and smell the roses. You know, on the way to the track to run... :) :) :)

Hoosier Dad...........Thank you. I'm with you in spirit. Please tell your son he is not alone. So many fine young men and women felt like he did. When you are the only kid in your school going all out for a service academy appointment, you feel alone sometimes. But one thing this forum will tell you...................from shore to shore, every house went through the same feelings when the TWE came, and your son has close to 1000 new friends in spirit! I can tell you from experience, down the road, YEARS from now, it will come up in conversation that your son was a Nominee for USAFA. The look in people's eyes! I know this! My brother was an Appointee for Annapolis in the early 70's. To this day, people look shocked when I even mention a service academy name. Tell your son................BRAVO from Tailwind Angel for making it this far. BRAVO!!

Futurepilot's mom - if it was me, I would say to myself...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.............interesting!

I am totally speculating and have no knowledge on this, but maybe they are holding out trying everything they can to get your son an Appointment? you know the old saying about the half full/half empty glass. I see it as half full. where's my emoticons? Trying to put a happy face in here.

Tailwind- Thanks for the optimism! Like what was said earlier--it's not over til the fat lady sings!!! But this waiting is difficult. Just trying not to think about it too much. Sending prayers to heaven- whatever is God's plan but, then saying - I hope your plan is my plan too! Ha ha.

DS is cool, calm, and collected - studying, sports, all sorts of activity. Guess that's why he has gotten this far - an ability to keep moving.

This thread has been great, reading everyone's thoughts. Parents and kids who have not gone through this process can't imagine the excitement and anticipation. All have worked so hard. Whatever the outcome, as our Congressman said at an awards night.."All of these young men and women will go far in life - their futures are bright!"

We wait.

Our DS was going for USAFA and a friend of his from the same school was going for USNA. I know his mom so we tried to keep each other supported. Our DS got his TWE last week and the other young man got his TWE from the USNA on Monday. They did have a young lady from their school accepted to the USNA last year that was friends with both of these two. Lets just say they are both sad they didn't get in. My DS spoke to her via Facebook this weekend to tell her that he didn't get in but is going to do AFROTC instead. She told him she wished she did as they have NO time for themselves. I am sure she was just trying to make him feel better but I think it gave him a little boost just the same. It's tough out there!

And sometimes......

You just "have to take a leap of faith. Jump off that cliff, spread your arms, and have faith that what will be............will be."

I truly wish I could pack up the TWE kids club and the NQ kids club for 2 weeks this summer and put them up at a big hotel in Maui. They sure deserve it. I need to win that Powerball first. Psyhic powers not working at the moment. On the fritz.

Friends

Even though DS won't be reapplying, I still find myself coming to this thread to see how everyone else's stalking is going! You all are great!

One question: Do I have really ignorant friends or have other people encountered those who, when you explain that DS is waiting for an appointment to the AFA, think he is just enlisting?

It happens all the time. Even after 4 years I have people ask when my son's enlistment will be done and he can go to college.

I think that people simply understand joining the military as "enlisting". 95% of the American public cannot explain the difference between a commissioned officer and a non-commissioned officer. As for thinking that a SA Cadet is anything but a college student, that is another topic...

Still haven't heard back from the academy yet....Do you think this is a good or a bad thing? Its definetly stressing me out

Hoopincj: There is really no good answer to this based upon prior years - this year is so different. If you get a chance call your counselor, they can tell you the status of your application, I have always found our counselor to be friendly and helpful. Good Luck.
