Class of 2015 - Mailbox Stalkers Club

Pima - perhaps usafa84 was referring to a full ride (or otherwise very good) scholarship at a school with no ROTC, vs doing ROTC without having received an ROTC scholarship or other significant scholarship from that institution. I can understand where a DS or DD without a scholarship could get persuaded by parents (aka the ones paying the tuition) to take an alternate course if it was a matter of obtaining a scholarship or not.

I have a differing opinion in regards to: "If you can close the door on the AF because they did not give you an appointment, than it wasn't a fit IMPO."

The seventeen and eighteen year olds who have been getting the QNV letters have many doors in front of them. IMPO, choosing a non Air Force related plan B has no bearing on what kind of fit they would have made at USAFA. Their ability to make their plan B into their new plan A is part of what's so great about being that age.
Last year my son got a TWE from USNA. It had been his heart's desire to go there since he was in second grade. (He used to call it "the Navy Academy," it was so cute!) The TWE was like a knife through the heart. USAFA was his plan B. Right now he's finishing up his freshman year at USAFA. If you talk to him, he can't picture himself being anywhere else. He's happy, he's involved, he's an Air Force man. Does it mean he wasn't a good fit for Navy because he didn't reapply or go NROTC? No. It just means that he made another choice and applied himself, just like he's always done. Trust me, the kids get over it before we do!
For the parents out there still waiting on the mail, know that complete strangers are praying you get the news you desire! For the parents of kids with TWE's, my heart aches with you. But very soon you will get one more reminder of just how wonderful your kid is when he/she makes plan B into their new plan A and attacks it with all the strength and vigor of youth!

Appointment received not attending

Hopefully by not accepting the appointment it frees up the slot for someone else..hope thats true..

@USMA 2015 - did you turn down the USAFA appointment to accept the USMA one? My son also turned down the USAFA one and is also from WI-08! He has a friend waiting on USAFA - maybe between the two of them he'll hear good news soon!

AMEN!

It is important to not look back and ask what if? You need to accept this path and do everything to be the best you can be.

That is always the hardest part for the first few months with every child...What if I chose this path over the other path, maybe that path would have been better!

Maybe it would have worst!

If you second guess yourself you will drive yourself insane.

Hm, since I will be making calls to all candidates in WI 6-8 who haven't accepted their offers to USMA yet, you may be hearing from me (or my husband) this weekend!

OBXmom, my son is exact opposite, his dream was USAFA, its what he knew as his mom and dad were both USAFA grads, he's an Air Force Brat--he rcvd early appointment to USNA last year, and held off on accepting until he heard from USAFA. TWE finally arrived with Falcon Scholarship offer. This was a huge decision for him...he is now finishing up his Plebe year at USNA, and is totally immersed and happy with his decision to go USNA instead of the "Chair Force" as he calls it, LoL. He never looked back...well maybe a quick glance a few weeks ago, when his GF, now a senior, got appoinment to USAFA and TWE to USNA

Relax strike eagle--You'll have to get used to Air Force/Navy/Army oneupmanship especially as the rival football games approach--We are all one happy military family, its all done in fun. I'm AF myself (note my username), so our Navy son teases us, and we call him a squid, but we all know where the Commander In Chief's Trophy is :shake:
Its all good :thumb:

It is a bit of an adjustment for me as well. I spent two decades in the Spec Ops community (US Army), and the idea of my son serving in the AF is just fine with me. I remember being in the desert looking up at a pilot in an F-18. He waggled his wings at us as he headed off home and my team prepped for our night movement. At that moment it seemed to me that he had it all over us :thumb:

Have not been on the forums for awhile -- DS got his QNV letter two weeks ago. Disappointed, not distraught. He said he'll reapply, but got busy right away doing what had to be done these last few months of high school. Aggie Eagle program at Texas A&M (got a scholarship); Commandant's leadership scholarship (A&M); and just found out yesterday he received an AFROTC scholarship for A&M. So he's set on the ROTC route (just like his dad - Texas A&M Corps of Cadet graduate; AF F-15C pilot for 22 years) and if the AFA drops in his lap before he's done with ROTC, he'll jump ship in a heartbeat.

The AFA is not the only way to get a great education, it's just an EXCELLENT way to get a great education. Timing is truly key - as an AF spouse I recognize that and as a future AF mom, I know it to be true in spades.

It's heartening to hear of late BFEs, but we are not counting on it. Just as I thought when I was pregnant with DS #2 that absent any pictures - it's probably another boy, I was in that mindset and knew it would be wonderful. If a girl, such a nice surprise, but if a boy, I'm already prepared. 9.5 months go by - another boy. Now I think "what ever would I have done with a girl?" but know realistically I would have been fine either way. That is how I'm thinking of the AFA. Baby Girl. :groupwave:

DELANY,

Here is a big high five for your son!!! I have known quite a few AGGIE grads through my DH's career. Great group of people! We did have a token Aggie in our military wedding, OH, so many years ago.:thumb:

Have a great weekend!

We're off to D.C. in the Morning. Hope to see some of the active duty appointments come though next week. Good Luck everyone!
