Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

my DS tells me that NWP candidates do very well at the academy.

Thanks for the encouragement FalconFamily. We are still anxious for him to receive the appointment since Falcons are hearing last this year. It seems like it has been such a long process but I'm sure in hindsight this will be largely forgotten as DS moves onto new challenges. . .

I remember reading that there was a facebook group for the class of 2016? Is that still a thing, or was that deleted? lol Thanks!

Yes there are several groups. One is just for cadet parents from all classes. The others are for the Class of 2015 parents only. I think there was a closed group for the class of 2016 Appointees, however I would caution anyone from posting much on FB. The less visible you are on FB, the more you can blend in during I-Day and BCT. Some cadets will create closed groups once they get into their academic squadrons during the year.

I think the appointee FB site was voluntarily shut down due to concern about BCT cadre potentially using statements against the Basic Cadets. However, I believe that there is a parents site for 2016 parents.

It is all in the way the question is posed. Look back a few pages ago and a poster stated that the MOC staff said they have several on the slate that received an apptmt.

For posters that understand the system knew that this was the wrong question because an MOC has a limited amount that they can be charged. 5 at any given time, and traditionally if an MOC has 2 available they will submit 2 slates of 10, not 1 slate of 10 and take 2.
All 10 on a slate could receive an appointment (not likely). Only one on a slate will be charged to the MOC. It is not all that unusual for 2 on a single MOC slate to be appointed. I believe the MOCs are notified of all on their slates that receive an appointment not just the one that is being charged to them.

Oh okay. Yeah that's a smart idea!

Packer,

My 2 appointed from the slate, goes back to the MOC submitting 1 slate with 2 available to be charged to them. I am sorry for any confusion I may have created with that comment.

As Packer stated it is not uncommon for 6,7,8 candidates on an MOC slate to be apptd. However, only 1 if the MOC has 1 available charge will be charged to that nom.

Use MI as an example, if I am correct there are 15 districts. That is 15 MOC Cong noms. A slate can have 10. If the the MOCs don't talk, there could be overlap on slates. Add in Pres. ROTC, etc, and it is theoretically possible that all 10 on both Sens lists get an apptmt.

NC for example does not talk, an a candidate in JROTC, can have:
Pres
VP
ROTC, even in JROTC
3 MOCs

They would fight on 6 slates. This is why everyone says apply for every and any nom you are eligible. It allows you the ability to live another day!

I have no doubt the boys will meet this fall!

DS has a MOC and Presidential nom. If he receives an appointment charged to the Presidential nom will he still show up on the MOC list?

Let our prayers be that BFE's and the TWE's go to the right people. I have read that up to 1/3 of the appointees do not complete the four years, and while for many the 1-3 year experience was positive and the source of many lifelong friendships, for many others the experience was negative. My DS has very solid qualifications...not rock solid.... but certainly enough for him to get an invitation, but there is still that element in the back of my head that questions, "is this the right thing for him". I take comfort in knowing that God works all things for good to those that love him and call upon his name", so no matter if it is BFE or TWE it will be for his benefit. I also have been impressed with the rigor of the process and am thankful that the USAFA has a very good idea of the right type of person for the USAFA.....if it is not my DS then it may be he is made for something equally important and equally good, perhaps even the patience and humility of trying again next year. It will hurt to get a TWE, but be thankful for the experience, trusting in God for the best, and trust that the USAFA knows what it is doing.......... and I admit, (I am writing this mostly for my own nerves)

I know several Academy grads - Some recruited for their sport, others applied and this was their dream. I also know two current students (a 1st year and a 2nd year).

I don't know if they are trying to "smooth over" the pain of us anticipating a TWE (at this point, this is where we are) - but some say if they had it to do all over again - they would have taken the AFROTC scholarship - they would have had a more enjoyable college experience. Of course, this doesn't deter DS's focus... but it does make me wonder if this is the right choice for him, although we may not ultimately have a choice anyhow (and it's not my choice, it's his)- this is a HUGE commitment - at least a 9 year one. Of course I think DS knows what is in store for him (although I'm not always sure why he wants to put himself (and his future family) through the same hardships his Dad has endured - time away from family, flight training, etc). DH did four 6+ plus deployments from 2005-2010. DS had a very hard time with some of the deployments DH was on during his middle school years.

Dutchman could not have said it better - I too pray that the BFE's go to the right people...

While your path may not be the one you WANT, it may be the path that is RIGHT for you.

Tanks to everyone for all your input, have been stalking mailbox, email, caller-id etc, etc, etc

PS know of one, my DS's friend, notification of an appointment from CT-3

That is such a sucinct post CristalLee.
If that doesn't put it in focus for everyone still waiting, incl. us by the way, then nothing will.

Very well written.

I'm with you CL, I think about it all the time and I wonder if it's going to be the right choice for my son, he's had a VERY difficult 2 years due to a medical situation that occurred to my wife and he's had to step up to the plate to do far more than most teens are asked to do nowadays.

He's been the one doing all the housework, laundry, providing care, and even cooking. All that in addition to killing school, sports, and ECs (he just won first place in AL for his category in DECA) - He's pretty run-down but I know he'd perk right up facing a new challenge such as USAFA or Auburn.

After all he's been through, I have to admit I worry and wonder if he doesn't deserve to have less rather than more stress after a pretty tough last couple of years.

However, in the end, it's his choice to make and I will abide by whatever decision he makes. It's the least I can do...

Congrats!!! DECA - what does that stand for? All I can think of the Commissary.

On a semi-unrelated note... my DD was named "Sophomore of the Year" for the Bi-state area. (She's not applying to USAFA)... but i'm still super proud of her!

They went to Orlando last year and ran rampant all over Disney World... I'm sure it was VERY tough on the little fella...

The International is in Salt Lake City this year. He'll get familiar with "Fry Sauce" I'm sure....

Congrats to your Daughter!

Yes, that is much more impressive than the "DeCA - Defense Commissary Agency". BIG CONGRATS!!!

Another side note while i'm reaching deep within today - If my DS had received a LOA - I would have never gone looking for more information from the internet - and never would have found this forum. I'm very thankful for the insights, humor, and people i've had the pleasure to interact with in these forums. I've learned a tremendous amount and appreciate the process. My DS and I have talked about the forums (he's not on here - he quite simply doesn't have the time - he gets home between 6-10pm on any given night due to school EC's) - he's thankful for any bit of information I've had for him (good or bad). THANK YOU!

Congratualtions Lt. Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger

Big breaking news...http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123295660

Congratulations and thank you, Lt Gen Wolfenbarger for your past years of service and continuing with your commitment to serve this great country.

This was particularly interesting:
Wolfenbarger, a native of Beavercreek, Ohio, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1980 after graduating in the first class with female cadets at the Air Force Academy.
