Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

Curious if there has been an official release of how many candidates have applied this year?

If my DS gets a TWE - I will not think he has failed.

No one thinks you have failed.

Unfortunately my parents are thinking the opposite. It hurts that they're not giving sympathy. Made me cry. Still hopeful for Prep School. That would be a big relief.

You have not failed. Don't listen to anyone, not even your family, not even your parents, who tries to tell you you are a failure. Getting a TWE is just a step in the process.

I am sorry it hurts.

In my opinion they are not knowledgeable of the process. You have not failed.

You can be offered the USAFA Prep School, a Falcon Scholarship, or you can attend prep on your own (a Freeagent). These are all opportunities that you can do. I have said this many times on this forum - Prep school is a really good thing. A year of academics and emotional/physical maturity is invaluable. Keep looking for opportunities, this process of appointments are not in your control. Executing a Plan B or C is. Good Luck!

You have to be an incredible student, leader, athlete and person of great character just to get to this point! Don't let anyone take that away from you. Everything you have done to achieve the honor of being called a USAFA Candidate will continue to serve you well for the rest of your life. Don't let a bump in the road stop you from continuing onward to your dreams!

By the way, I just read last night on a college forum that the Princeton Review (I'm not sure what year) listed Harvard as the only university that is more selective than the USAFA and the USNA. All five of the service academies were on the top ten list for most selective schools in the country. Be proud of yourself and keep trying! :thumb:

To all of you who received TWEs today, I'm sorry! :frown: I did not receive a TWE in the mail myself, but it may have been delayed a bit. You know how smail is! (Although Kansas isn't far from Colorado o_O)

Don't be discouraged though! It truly is an accomplishment to get this far. I don't know about you guys, but I remember being extremely nervous when trying to acquire just a nomination to a service academy. Nominations alone are very competitive and hard to get! That's certainly something to be proud of. Think about it... An official member of congress (or two, or three) from your state found you to be in the top 10 most qualified to attend a service academy out of everyone who applied for nominations. That certainly says something!

Also, to make it this far just shows how much you/we have achieved academically and physically. (and extracurricularly?) And what about the live's you've changed with the leadership positions you've held? I know that I've impacted quite a few local families with a need for food by some of the fundraisers I've led in my schools' community service club. I know that I've moved people to tears and helped people (teens and adults) better understand morals, and sympathize with real life scenarios through the drama productions I've been in/led.

Just remember what you've already achieved. You are not a failure.

My TWE came on March 31st last year and my Falcon letter came April 27th. Just to give you a time frame. But Flieger could be right, the Falcon letters may be going out now.

WHOA!!!

Allow me to clarify: USAFA Prep School is what I was talking about; I was NOT speaking about the Falcon Foundation or Skelly...

Those I don't have any information on!

You are all amazing & I am so impressed!

I want to send my understanding of the heartache for those of you who received the TWE's. I know that your desire for this is like my son's desire, and there is no doubt in my mind that you all deserve a spot at the USAFA. Every single one of you has impressed me with your tenacity, your drive, your talents, your GPA's, your academic accomplishments, sports achievements, scouting achievements, extra-curricular activities etc. It really is sometimes a combination of factors that nobody can describe or define, when a candidate receives that offer of appointment. So many are truly worthy, and there simply aren't enough openings. However, I have never witnessed so many outstanding and remarkable young adults as all of you who have posted on this website over the past many months. You have blessed me, encouraged me, uplifted me and even brought laughter to my soul. I am so proud of all of you, as I am sure your parents, teachers, friends, family members, ALO's etc are too!!! My son is truly blessed to be able to go to school with amazing people like you. For those who will not be at the academy, I will pray that another route will be opened that will give you excitement and challenges. I know wherever you go, people will be honored to call you their friends. You are champions in my eyes!

TWE came yesterday. DS is ok and so are we. We are proud of his accomplishments thus far and know beyond doubt that he will continue to follow his dream of becoming an Officer in the USAF. He is moving to plan B and considering an alternate plan C. He is also planning to reapply to USAFA again next year.

michigander,

I am sorry this is happening to you, regarding your family, but sometimes parents don't know how to react to their children when this happens.

I bet if you were a fly on the wall at their offices, all you would hear from them is how proud they are of you and what a great child they have.

Wherever your feet land in the fall, you will do great and you will succeed. You need to remember you beat out your peers to go from student to candidate to applicant. The AFA is one of the most selective colleges in the nation, probably the world too. That is no small feat to get this far.

It's reasons like this why I'm glad I joined this forum :thumb:

michigander, I'm proud of YOU! You have no reason to feel as though you have failed. Hold your head high and keep striving to be all that you can be.

Remember, Integrity first, service before self and excellence in all the you do.:thumb:

Just want to add that there is a difference between being disappointed FOR someone and being disappointed IN someone. I would think that your parents are trying to be strong for your sake, so don't assume that their reaction is anything other than an attempt to give you strength.

Take Pima's comments to heart, Pima has been around this process for much longer than most of us on this forum. USAFA has always been very competitive, these past two years have been even more so. There are over 300 less appointments than the class of 2013 (1368 appointees). The class 2015 (1137 appointees) had nearly 3,000 more applicants than the class of 2013, yet had 231 less appointees. This year there are supposed to be 1050 appointees, and who knows how many applicants. As Pima and others have said, to make it this far in the process says quite a bit about the candidates, I cannot imagine how the admissions staff can try to choose.

Now there will be some declines which will offer some limited appointments to some people, there will also be a limited number of sponsored opportunities with for USAFA Prep School and Falcon Scholars. Then there are people who will reapply after a year at Plan B (self sponsored Prep or college), others will simply move on and find another way to gain their commissions (ROTC, etc). Now matter what, I think the people here will be very successful, and I wish you all the best.

michigander--I wish you could see how amazing of a person you are! I know it hurts, but if you can take a step back and see how much you have accomplished in your young life so far you would see what we see. You are a candidate for the United States Air Force Academy--that is awesome!! And if you don't get in this year, you still should be proud that you made it this far. I am sorry if it doesn't seem like your parents are proud of you. Maybe they are just so disappointed for you that it is coming off that way. But I do know for a fact, your forum family is very proud of you. So, michigander, hold your head up high--you deserve to.

SPNU. No TWE in the mail today either. Not giving up until I get it!

michigander, the letter my DS received stated there were approximately 12,000 applicants and only 1040 openings this year. Applying the math, that works out to a 8.7% acceptance rate. The fact that you, DS and all the others who have or will receive the TWE made it to this point is AWESOME!

How did you do that math? It comes out to 11% If you look at it though it should always be around a 10percent chance because their are 10 MOC noms and only one appointment offered per 10. Still I understand your point 10% puts it up their with schools like harvard who have a 8 or 9% rate. Everyone keep your head up there are always different roads to the same destination.
