Class of 2018 Female, happy to answer questions

The PFT and AFT are both measured on 500 point scales. If you score below a 250, you have less than a 2.0 for that component of your PEA. If your total PEA is less than 2.0, you will be placed on athletic probation. Each component of the PFT is a 0 to 100 point score. If you score zero in one section, your other four must equal 250 or greater.
(That's how it worked 5 years ago, anyway.)

Hello! I have applied for the class of 2020. My application was deemed competitive and I am currently practicing for my CFA. My questions; How long does it averagely take to go from "competitive" to "candidate" or is it just a thing that goes based on the applicant. Also besides practicing for the CFA and working towards my nominations, do you have any recommendations?

Red,
I was initially considered "Potentially Competitive" after the questionnaire. I am now in the "Candidate" phase and am filling out all of the forms. Do you have any tips on what I can do to increase my chances of getting accepted and/or getting my nomination? Everything is so time consuming and difficult.

Thank you,
Sam

Read the sticky at the top of the USAFA forum and in the Nomination forum. Read old threads. Get your stuff in early. Have your essays reviewed for grammar, flow, etc. Talk with your ALO and see where you can improve. Tons of info on this forum for ideas on how to prepare for interviews, dress, etc.

The AFT/PFT during Basic don't "count" as part of your Physical Education Average. However, if you score low enough on one or both of the tests, you can be placed into an academic year program run by the Recondo people (since you don't technically have a PEA, you can't technically be on athletic probation, but they will suck up plenty of your time just as if you were on it.) It's basically a preventative measure to make sure that you don't start with extremely low scores by the time you take your first semester AFT/PFT.

If you can't do a pullup, you won't automatically fail the PFT, I know plenty of people who have struggled with them and still have easily passed every PFT. Same with the jump, so the best advice I can give is to spend some time trying to max the other sections while you target whatever event(s) you struggle with. There's more than enough advice out there for improving PFT scores but if you'd like some more (particularly on going from sucking at pullups to maxing the section), PM me and I can help out.

Well, it looks like the pft's do count as my DD became ill and injured right before the 2nd one and did not do well. Only to suffer a concussion during A-Course and now after marching back with the Sq. They say they want her to choose either file a form 34 or they are recommending dis enrollment! She does not want to leave but a person on the board said it would take a while if she repealed and it probably would not do any good and they would still dis enroll her and that would look bad to other colleges and since it may take a while she would loose out on scholarships for next year? She is scared bc of what they told her about looking bad, but my thing is they are not even willing to give her the benefit of the doubt that she can pick it up at the end of the month. between the Virus and the concussion she may have missed about 5 days due to bed rest, just very disappointing for her as this is all she has ever wanted. She had an ROTC scholarship but that was gone when she accepted the Appt? What to do if she ends up having to come home?

Probably not related to the PFT. A concussion after a head injury is usually a separation or a set-back to the next class year (at my academy). They don't do setbacks much at usafa I don't think. They'll probably just go with a separation. Unfortunate.

Jmoney, you really don't know what you're talking about... USAFMOM'19 PM me if you want to talk about your daughter's situation.

Jmoney, I know you're trying to help, with this is an untrue statement. I know of several cadets who have suffered concussions and they were not separated nor turned-back.

Agreed and one of those is my DS. He hit his head during intramurals and suffered a concussion during 1st BCT and wasn't and not currently being separated.

USAFMOM'19 may not have enough post logged to make PMs. BlahuKahuna you might want to send her one just in case.

I think all these situations are handled on a case-by-case basis, so a blanket statement can never be applied. I would recommend that OP's DD speak with her AOC if she hasn't done so already.

Good luck to MOM'19 and her DD. A concussion as long as its mild shouldn't be an issue. As someone who has had multiple ones, to include severe ones, this shouldn't be an issue. Guess I don't understand the USAFA process for them to be pressuring her to dis-enroll. Good luck!

I also hope some of our Class of '19 female posters come back and give the young canadettes a fresh perspective on their BCT experience. We had a good group of posters go in this year hope they come back.

I agree Boozebin! I've written to a couple of the posters and I'm due to send a nice congratulatory card for "Beating the Beast." I'll ask them to come back during all their spare time. :p LOL! Seriously though, I too would love to hear about their experiences.
