Hello, this is my first post on the service academy forums.
As the title says I'm inquiring about information related to time frames for In-processing. I accepted my appointment that I received on the 25th of December. No one in my family has ever been to a service academy and my parents want to plan out as much as possible as far out as possible.
My acceptance letter just says to watch my portal for updates regarding it, does anyone have an idea as to when those updates will drop?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice/info!

I-day this year will be on June 26th which you can find in USAFA's 2023-2024 calendar: https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/AY-2023-2024-Calendar.pdf

And the I-Day schedule for this year hasn't been released yet to my knowledge, but the I-Day schedule for last year looked like this: https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/IDay_Parent_Program_2023_01.pdf

The I-Day schedule seems to change just a little each year, but the drop off time seems to stay the same. As far as when updates will drop, I have no idea as I'm applying for the class of 28 as well.

Congratulations on your appointment.

Your parents may want to check out the link below and contact the nearest USAFA Parents Club. The club may even have an event planned closed to reporting in for the Class of 2028, as well as serve as a resource.

Congratulation!

The Class 2028 handbook will drop sometime in Spring and will give you tons of information. Check out the Class of 27' handbook for a good reference.

We arrived in COS two days before I-day. Our cadet wanted to be out there a little early to relax before we dropped them off. The day before I-day they have a ton going on at USAFA for the in-coming cadet's and their parents. It a great way to see the USAFA and meet other incoming cadets, in a relaxed setting.

I would look at booking a hotel early, and would stay close to the North Gate. Another area for your parents to look into is staying the day after I-day to watch the Class Swearing In ceremony, on the parade field. This does not last long and your parents can only watch and then leave, There is no contact with the cadets.

Hi Monkemunk! Congratulations! This is all great advice. (YES - Book hotels early - especially VRBOs for Parents Weekend - Aug 30 through Sept 2 (parents will probably leave on Sept 3...)

I'm part of the parent club in Middle Tennessee. There are three - for each of the three regions. Middle and East Tennessee have really strong parent clubs, but the West doesn't so the Middle Tennessee club has picked up West Tennesseans...and we also have some East Tennesseans too! Please reach out via the link Capt MJ gave you. I just set up this account for our group, so I can't direct message you yet (and you probably don't have enough posts yet either!)

In any case, I'm so excited that we have our first Tennessee Appointee. We have a great group of parents that would love to talk to your parents and Cadets that stand by to help their fellow cadets. I look forward to talking with you and your family in person!

Roll 'Bolts!!! Go Falcons!!!

Hi! I will be sure to pass the info along to my parents, they plan on creating their accounts for this forum soon. I'm from Knoxville so my parents will probably join the East Tennessee Club.
Thank you so much for the support!

We have Cadets on many different teams, so if your EastTN group doesn't have a cadet that matches your interest, please feel free to reach out - we have cadets on football, baseball, track and field, flying team, triathlon, saber, cheer, dance, drum and bugle corps, and I'm sure others that I'm not thinking of...

Best of luck to you! This is a wild ride! Enjoy!!!

Last year we drove from PA to Colo Spgs, arriving on the Sunday prior to I-Day. It was a nice family trip prior to dropping our son off. I would recommend to your parents that they should plan on staying in Colo Spgs for I-Day. The programs at the Academy were very reassuring for us parents and informative. Your drop off time will be based upon the Basic squadron you end up in, which you won’t know until early June-ish. We did not stay for the swear in parade, and that was OK. But, we were in the hotel room for the I-Day evening phone call, which was important. If your parents are Facebook users, there should be (or will be soon) a 2028 Parents Facebook group, which they should join. Our 2027 group has been amazing!

What day of the week is I day? We are considering driving from PA. How many days did you take to make that drive?

I-Day is Wednesday, June 26th. We left very early on Friday, and stopped at the Museum of the Air Force at Wright-Patterson Friday afternoon. We spent Friday night just east of Indianapolis, Saturday west of Topeka, then arrived in Colo Spgs Sunday afternoon. Monday and Tuesday am we explored Colo Spgs, then we went to the ice cream social Tuesday evening. And, as I said, Wednesday we had 9-ish drop off time. After drop off, we went back to the Association of Graduates, which is where the ice cream social was held, and over to Arnold Hall for the Parent's Fair. It was a reassuring and informative day for us. Then we started the drive back on Thursday, getting home on Saturday.

And, BTW, the Museum of the Air Force was very, very cool and well worth the stop! We highly recommend it. And, it’s free!

The Museum of the Air Force is an absolute must!!! Also, make time in Colorado Springs to go to the National Museum of WWII Aviation, it is fantastic! Also Wings over the Rockies at the old AFB in Denver!

I really appreciate you sharing these tips! Literally moments before I saw Sebship's post, I was just talking to my DS about driving out early to spend some time in Colorado to get use to the altitude, to avoid covid via airplane travel, and to make the experience more relaxing. Thank you!

While going out early is fun, no need to go early to get used to the altitude. USAFA takes into account that many basics fly in the day before from sea level (including my ds amd me when I was a basic) and take appropriate actions. BCT is a very controlled environment and they build PT up slowly.

It will take your DS a while to get used to the altitude… the Basic Cadets will spend the first few weeks on the hill, doing PT but also doing lots of “hurry up and wait” things, like briefings. The bigger physical things come when they march out to Jack’s Valley, at some point in mid-July. a few extra days in Colo Spgs won’t make much of a difference. For us, our DS is our only child, so the family time prior to dropping him off was our big deciding factor for the drive and the time.

Agree. As a former military member in Colorado it took a good month, maybe more, before I felt like I could breathe on a run. A few days won't matter as far as altitude but it is a great state to come and explore! Lots to experience.

Mom to monkemunk here :)

Thank you to everyone for the information shared! This has been very helpful.
