This is through the English channel, Russian ships under way towards Syria a few days ago. Are their aircraft carriers coal burners? That ship belches out some smoke....

Maybe she is coal roller, but check out that bow ramp. SWEET ! She doubles as a skate park.

I understand she travels with her own fleet of breakdown tugs.

Maybe bunker oil?

Would they have coal ships roaming the seas to refuel that beast?

They may be on their way to Midas.
While part of STANAVFORLANT in the old days we used to "make" black smoke when the Warsaw Pact helicopters started coming too close.

I know really , one wonders how they refuel (any port they would stop at along the way?). And as far as I know, they only operate a single carrier

I know the kids these days (including DS) like to "roll coal" as part of a badass persona. Maybe this is that?

The last major Russian naval victory was at Dogger Bank, not long before the last Cubs World Series triumph, on the way to a misadventure with the Japanese fleet at Tsushima Strait, and they are probably spoiling for another one.

So can someone please tell us what fuel that ship burns. Inquiring minds want to know.

The only thing I've learned is what's a "coal roll", which, with all due respect #tjb, is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

There's another fine photo of this ship; there are quite a few stories on her right now. The second article confirms she is a steam ship, which means she likely burns DFM or other petroleum-based fuel. That much dark smoke comes from a mechanical issue of some kind. And yes, as noted by another, she does travel with her own ocean tug. That should be mortifying!

Time to bring in my recce from back in the dark ages. First, that flight deck is awfully small. Those two fighters look to be standing the alert launch, but with that short run up they can't have much range. Second, the flight deck has a whole lot of bare metal and not so much non-skid. I'd hate to be on deck doing flight ops in bad weather. Last, that Udaloyy destroyer has a lot of patchwork paint on her hull. I wonder how short her workup for deployment was.

Respect noted! I'm just the mom in this deal. "Rolling coal" is most definitely a diesel truck thing around here. Of course you'd better have the pipes to deliver the proper acoustic support!

Let it be noted that my DS's only did things that make sense to DW and me. Furthermore, they NEVER EVER did anything dumb.
