Commissioning Marine Corps/NSW

I am very interested in attending USMMA. I come from a very competitive district, so I know that although I am competitive and have gotten to visit USNA through candidate visit weekend, I do not have a great chance at admission. I saw a statistic from one of my senators that said only 2% applied for a congressional nomination to USMMA. Thus, I am considering USMMA as my #1 realistic choice. (I also love ships, the hands on curriculum, and many choices available).

To be honest, I would be pretty happy commissioning Marine Corps and hopefully securing infantry after TBS, but there is a part of me that would like to give BUDs a shot. I heard at USNA you can put SEALs as 1st preference and Marine Ground as 2nd assuming you attend each branch's summer training such as Leatherneck and score highly on PT tests. Is this possible at USMMA given sea year or other regulations? Can you attend say OCS after graduation and go Marine Corps if you do not receive a Seal Billet or would you have to commission Navy and just find a different community if you put SEALs? I have seen some videos discussing former KPs who received orders to BUDs and explained how training with the busy schedule was difficult but is still feasible given the discipline and commitment, (+a lack of sleep lol). Likewise, could you apply for say an AFSOC role such as STO or TACP and Marine Ground. Further, can anyone provide information on what the commitment for summer training + extra stuff is required to apply for either the MC, AF, and Navy? Sorry this was kind of long. USMMA is a great choice for a commission in the Marine Corps. Its a great choice for an active duty commission period. I went Active duty after Kings Point. I wanted to be a Surface Warfare Officer aboard a Navy destroyer and after graduation I got my wish. I even got the duty station I requested San Diego CA. Since most of the class prefers to sail commercially or work civilian shoreside the active duty billets are easy pickens. Good luck kid.
 
I don’t know about buds, but I am pretty sure that USMMA midshipmen go to leatherneck along with the USNA midshipmen. There would be no need to attend ocs. KP has a marine option club that works out together to prep for leatherneck.
 
USMMA currently has an excellent USMC Liason on site. His name escapes me. Call admissions and ask for his name and contact info. He presented at one of the zoom calls for current applicants, with 2 mids who are commissioning USMC. Great presentation.

The Deputy Athletic Director is a USNA Graduate/retired Marine Officer who also should be someone to talk to.
 
Funny thing about KP is a large amount of entering Plebes wanna go Active Duty until sea year hits and see all the going ashore C Notes filling their pockets from the 1st Engineer or Chief Mate doling it out like Halloween candy.

The enlisted failure rate at BUD/s is double that of officers. KP Mids will attend SEAL Officer Assessment and Selection during the 1c summer. USMC requires attendance at Leatherneck - during 1c summer. Not sure if it is possible to do both.

I'm agreeing with you but just contributing to the conversation. The SEAL enlistment contract is a body generator meant to improve numbers in NSW if they graduate, but when they ring the bell they go to the fleet. Win/win for the navy. Midshipmen have more time to fully evaluate their decision where young people who enlist in a large part are in love with the idea of kicking in doors and shooting up the place. They go into BUD/S unprepared and shocked by the enormity of it all plus, oh yeah, the cold Pacific.
 
Preparation is the key ingredient. Officer candidates are weeded out before even getting to BUDS. Enlisted has some preparatory opportunities and if they are pursued there is also a higher success rate than the norm. But keep in mind there is some power and illusion to having such a high drop out rate. They want to be able to say there is a 80% wash out rate but the numbers for officers are lower for two main reasons the mandatory prep and also the fact that the Navy does not want to waste the money invested in these individuals. They want to plug in officers where they will succeed. The enlisted who go to BUDS and fail,are then utilized by the Navy as they see fit. Possibly painting and cleaning which in my opinion is a bad idea when you have someone who aspires to be an operator. Just a breading ground for bad attitude. Once again though hopefully they researched and knew what they were getting into. The old interweb has more than enough info to be read, it is a game changer. Why do officers have a higher success rate than enlisted men at becoming Navy SEALs?

Officers have a much higher chance of becoming Navy SEALs than enlisted men do and the reason is how they prepare for BUD/S.

I recommend applying for an NROTC - Marine option scholarship at a college/university with a major you want to study.
