I attended Flying Bridge day last Friday and just as an FYI, it appears as if computers will be issued to the incoming class of 2028. In the past plebes could bring their own computer so long as it met specifications that generally are outlined in the Logging In Reporting Instructions.

When did that stop? I remember back in summer89 the Plebes class of 93 were issued laptops. Thought it was status quo from then on.

I can't say when it stopped, but numerous recent editions of the Logging In document have text that seem to allow individuals to bring their own, subject to it meeting certain requirements. As an example, the Logging In for the Class of 2026 states under Computer Requirements, "All candidates reporting to Indoctrination must arrive with a personal tablet computer that meets or exceeds the following hardware and software requirements to ensure they are best prepared to accomplish the institutional learning outcomes..."

In the Logging In doc for the Class of 2008, the text addressing the computer reads "You are required to purchase a personal computer that has been selected by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The selected computer for the Class of2008 is a Notebook computer." It also reads "You must maintain the issued Academy-approved computer system during your entire tenure at the Academy" So that appears to indicate a govt issued computer at least up to Class of 2008.

From what I gather from a parent call. There were issues with security and access (that's really simplifying it) so they will be issued to them.

You had the option to have it issued and pay for it or bring your own if you met the specs. As they are enhancing IT security they want them all issued now.
