Contacts vs. Glasses

Hornet,

You said, "sicker than a dog"....okay, my illness radar went up---were you physically sick from the dust in Jack's Valley? Respiratory sick? Please explain. AND, what happens if someone gets sick? Can they leave? Now flymom is worrying!!

Don't fret, its called "Jack's Hack" and it varies from person to person. I know one person got as bad as getting pneumonia. I had a fever and respiratory infection (fever lasted one night). I was one of the worst case scenarios. Couldn't speak more than a couple words without a coughing fit. Actually coughed to hyperventilating once. oops. :) Most people come back with a cough from the dust wreaking havoc on one's lungs. It usually goes away within a month completely.

The bigger problem is usually pick eye and conjunctivitis in BCT. But, they are well aware and know how to deal with outbreaks.

wow...thanks for the insight into 'Jack's Hack'. It sounds like having BCGs could be of benefit out there to help keep the dust out of the eyes? I guess there's not much you can do to lessen breathing it in. How long are you all out there? Please answer later if you have homework. Your insight to usafa life is priceless. Thanks for making this mom worry less.:thumb: :thumb: (That's two thumbs up for you!)

yes, and if not, then you can just use glasses for any programs... are you sure you're only 20/50 if you need contacts?

i think you are getting me confused with someone else. i have something like 20/200 in my eyes and currently wear contacts. i just wanted to make sure that after BCT i could continue to wear contacts, because i really dont like glasses.

So, I get everything that's been posted so far. I currently wear contacts, but here's my question: after BCT, are non-BC glasses allowed?

Yes, after BCT you will be able to wear your own glasses.

If you require BCG's for BCT, the Academy will send you a prescription form and a measurement guide for your optometrist to fill out. You then send it in as a part of one of your information packets. When you arrive for I-day, you will have 2 brand new shiny pair of BCG's waiting for you!

A suggestion fo you eyeglass wearers - bring two of the stretchy eyeglass bands that you would wear for sports if you have glasses. Our son was given that advice and he used both of his a lot. They really help keep your BCG's in place when you are doing all the of physical activity. You will need two because you will be rinsing the mud and sweat off of one band and letting it dry while you are wearing the other.
