Crash on Chesapeake Bay Bridge

For me, maybe a little heeby or jeeby but real heeby jeebys are for the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel which takes a LONG time to cross.
I crossed the CBBT only a couple times. That bridge in Maryland moves even on a calm day. Reminds me of the Cooper River bridge in Charleston. The old one. Narrow and rickety.

That one is just crazy. Drive out in the middle of the bay and purposefully go under water. At least with a normal tunnel you feel like there is adequate land above you and below the water.

My favorite drive in a low profile vehicle and under favorable wind conditions. Much better (but costly) option when driving up to Annapolis/DC or eastern shore to NJ/NY, than trying to go through the Hampton Roads tunnel (and 2 lane I64 to Richmond and crowded I95) during rush hour traffic on the beginning of a weekend!

A few years back a tractor trailer went over the side during marginal conditions…tragic for the family of the truck driver.

DS is utilizing the Eastern route to head south on weekends. The technology of that route is incredible. He says it is worth not dealing with traffic. And he likely gets a bit stoked about the engineering.
 
Here's another tunnel story. I lived in Ocean View, Norfolk, before its renaissance, and went to the year long Independent Duty Corpsman school in Portsmouth when the Portsmouth tunnel was down to one lane due to long term maintenance. If that weren't bad enough, the Saratoga and Forrestal were in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (which is in Portsmouth). The line of traffic to get to and through the tube was loooong. About the time I graduated, the tunnel work was done and the two carriers were leaving the shipyard. Imagine that.
