My DS RSVP'd for a candidate visit weekend at USNA; and because we live fairly close (2 hours), had not anticipated the need for us to incur the hotel expense for husband and/or I to stay overnight the two nights he will be there. However, I just read in the email DS received about a parent briefing that would be happening on Friday which we would miss. We would be able to participate in thursday and Saturday. Just curious if others view these briefings (or the Friday one), something we should not miss. I know the email called them "optional", so perhaps that is my answer; however, I will juggle our budget for the hotel if necessary. Thank you for the insight.

It is boiler plate for Parents. Not something you need to attend. We stayed for the briefing since we had driven a long way and it was very cold in Annapolis that week. No new information but the tour of the Academy was nice. Don't spend the extra mony, it isn't worth it.

If they are accepted and attend you will have many times to attend the Yard. Check out the Mid Store for the best values. "optional" means you don't have to do it or attend. I wouldn't spend the extra day. You have to pick up on Saturday at I think 12:00? Thursday is good with current Mids answering questions after your DD/DS leaves the room. Question and answer was very informative without the kid being there.

For a couple with NO military background, we found the parent briefing both informative and reassuring. I wouldn't make a special trip, but if you are there I would attend.

I appreciate the responses, helps alot. I will follow my initial plan of taking part on Thursday and also when I return Saturday morning for pick up. Thanks again.

Not to be misunderstood, Thursday night briefing is great. Lots of great questions and answers after your son/daughter leaves as a drag. When they can't say "oh dad" you are such an embarrassment. Friday is on your own but there are some things to see around town and on the Yard. I would suggest the Museum which you can spend hours touring.

At CVW briefs

Attended recently USNA- CVW and attended all briefs and it was necessary to be there. The discussions were good, but the real important answers came in the Q & A sessions. If you ask the same question to different admissions officers as an example, different answers sometimes are received and it has to do with the way in which they speak between the lines. Overall the briefs were important to be there.

CVW is mostly for the benefit of the applicant. Parents should consider attending as optional.
