I am a USCGA applicant for the class of 2016 and I have already submitted my entire application and it is currently under review for early action. I just got a letter in the mail from DoDMERB saying that I am qualified for the CGA which I would assume means they asked for my information? Since the DoDMERB is not required for your application to be reviewed and only required before an appointment can be offered I was just curious if it meant anything. Any information regarding this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm guessing not much. It's not a bad thing, certainly. I got what feels like a million DODMERB letters for broken bones and messed up joints....so if DODMERB is good with you, one less thing to worry about. If somehow you get a letter down the road saying you're not good in DODMERB's eyes, don't get too worried...just submit a waiver request...

Every applicant the CGA considers as competitive will get a letter from DoDMERB. It's pretty much just an indicator that you're moving along with the application process.

When in the process does this happen for the cga? Our son also applied to the naval academy and he was contacted very early in the process to do the dodmerb testing. He completed it last month and is listed as qualified for usna on the dodmets site.

He has not heard from the uscga about dodmerb, and according to the dodmets site the cga has not contacted dodmerb yet.

So, what is the process? Does the cga offer conditional appointments contingent on dodmerb approval? Does the academy send ALL applicants to dodmets...or only those that are deemed competitive? Ds basically is obsessing over this and wants to know if it is a bad sign that the cga has neither inquired to dodmerb or contacted him for medical testing.

On a side note, my wife wants to know if they do weddings at the cga.

If your DS completed the exam for the naval academy, then the CGA will just request for the exam results you took for the naval academy.
After saying that, I would figure that if your DS is qualified for the naval academy, then he should be for the CGA too.
And as for your Dodmets question about CGA not requesting the exam results, I would not worry about that, and maybe the CGA is just busy at the time. Or it could also depend what round you were put in. Hopefully that clears some things up

You would think that but it's not always true. I had disqualifications from both USNA and USCGA.... there weren't for the same things... they are done independently, and an OK from one doesn't mean an OK from the other.

In the end I received waivers from both, but all of those DODMERB letters play with your heart! Every letter was a punch to the face.

Yes they do! In fact every year after graduation you'll usually see a procession of three to five couples heading up the hill to get married that day or very soon after. It makes sense, all your families are already there for graduation, so most take advantage of it. Plus all your Academy friends can be there!

On a side note, it's not just Academy grads who get married there. My Aunt and Uncle who had no affiliation with the Academy got married there back in the 80s.

A candidate who is only applying to USCGA (and no other SAs) will only have a request sent to DODMETS if the candidate is deemed to be competitive for appointment. This is new this year - they used to send ALL applicant names to DODMETS for medical screening. Not any more.

However, if you are applying to another SA, then USCGA will simply request the results from DODMERB to determine your status. Obviously, if you are not USCGA competitive, they will not request them, so this is a good sign.

And as LITS stated, it is entirely (and often happens) to be medically qualified for one academy and not medically qualified for another, based on the respective academy's standard (eyesight is a common reason as standards vary among the SAs).

    mailing

For anybody who has received their DoDMERB mail, in relevance to the piece of mail saying your application was under review; did you receive the DoDMERB before or after?

    -thank you for any feedback.
