Duel Enrollment and AP

In catalog, systems engineering shows minors or "electives" such as mechanical engineering; electrical engineering, LNG; Off shore engineering.? if not all classes are offered each year, how does one determine which specialty to minor in?

The minor classes are usually offered on a regular basis; however, it again is predicated on interest. If there is only one person interested in a particular minor those classes probably wouldn't be offered. The minors aren't declared as early as majors and therefore there is more flexibility.

I've never heard of someone not being able to do a minor they wanted though, but that is from a fairly small sample size.

AP US History

As a part of the Dual Enrollment program you must be aware of the fact that taking college classes in addition to your high school classes makes you eligible to earn Dual Credit at both your high school and the City Colleges simultaneously. Many students opt for this program as it allows them to achieve credit at a low cost and helps them realize their learning potential. Your score on the AP US History Exam is very good. Did you use any online guidelines? I did pretty well on my AP US History, too.

I loved studying U.S. History, so the material just clicked and stuck to me. Of course, we did TONS of notes and multiple essays to prepare. I didn't use any online guides, just my notes, my teacher, some practice test, and a study session.

KPENGINEER......Systems Engineers can enroll in a minor, I believe this year they offered Offshore Engineering, Nuclear, and I can't remember what the other minor is. I have no idea what Shoppers think, but I can assure you that Systems Majors have a minor....may not mean much other than a stamp on a piece of paper, but, it is a minor none the less.

Is your real name by any chance Natalie Brown??

I would suggest to change your account name. Most people like to remain anonymous on this website.

I believe there was going to be a chance of an enviornmental minor in Systems, but for some reason it did not happen.

Bringing this thread back to see if anyone has anything else to add. DS had me send transcripts form a state U. English/comp class he took last year. He got an A but I am sure he wouldn't have received the same grade at KP. But is this an exemptible class? And if it is, would he he setting himself up for doom next year when he has to take English 2? If he did successfully exempt the class would he have a hole in his schedule? But of course it would be filled with study for his other classes. He actually said that, lol. Or would another class be scheduled. I know DS will speak with an advisor and make his decision on his own but I would like to be able to throw out all the questions he should consider before he decides if it is approved. And yes, DS has a better grasp on writing than I do. This apple (DS) fell from the tree with better grades in a better school system.

If they do exempt him from the English Class he most likely will have to take another humanities elective. So if he wants a GPA builder he may want to stick with English 1 if he's already had college level English. They won't take the credit but will put him in something else.

They will take the credit as long as it's college level and you have the transcripts for it. Generally the english professor also has to sign off on it so they may make you do some sort of writing assessment. I did this last year and did not take any elective in its place nor have I heard of anyone having to take an humanities elective to make up for it. It can be a good grade booster, though, so something to consider when deciding to exempt.

Our DS would have been allowed to skip English 1 and 2 due to completing IB English. He elected not to so that he would have two A's. The caliber of the writing of the mids as a whole is not great, so he found both English classes easy. (Not so for many other KP courses...)

On the other hand, DS was able to klep a class and they did not make him fill the spot with another elective. He appreciated the extra time for the other classes he had. There is benefits both ways.

Independent Study

DD and 4 other KP girls got together their First Class year with one of the English Prof's and did an independent study selecting SEA Literature that they were interested in.

This enable them to go to a Writer's Conference about SEA Literature. They found out that most authors that write books of sea adventures have NEVER been to sea. That was interesting.

This came about by having English courses approved from when she was a SELF Prep at NMMI.
