I recently heard about these forums and am excited to contribute. I'm very fortunate to be where I am and it's all due to the Navy, hard work, luck, and timely mentoring.

Brief background: Enlisted in 1999, NROTC scholarship from 2001 - 2005, SWO(N), various ships / jobs, a CO tour, pentagon tour, and I'm currently in fully-funded PhD studies as a Permanent Military Professor, which means that upon completion of my dissertation I'll serve as a USNA professor for 8-10 years before retiring. To say I'm thankful for all the Navy has provided would be a huge understatement.

As it specifically pertains to these boards: I can speak from experience as a NROTC midshipmen and later as an officer recruiter where I performed over 100 NROTC interviews and successfully guided dozens of applicants to OCS. I'll understand more about the USNA when I begin teaching but for now, I'm learning alongside many of you. :)

Be well and good luck!

What an awesome, inspiring story! My son's best friend since they were little has enlisted in the Navy and leaves for basic in August (the absolute right choice for him right now) but has wondered if anyone actually has a path such as yours (you understand it's "possible" but does it ever really happen). We were just talking about this last weekend. He is hoping that after some time in the fleet he may be ready for college and an officer path. I am definitely sharing this with him!

Welcome, I can't wait to hear more about your journey as you get settled at USNA.

Welcome! Great career path. You’ll enjoy the Yard, where all buildings are halls but not all halls are buildings.

Very possible. Of my four roommates when enlisted, three of us went officer. It's just a grind and I'll give you an example:

When enlisted in nuclear power school, a very academic setting and therefore one with a lot of commissioning interest, they coordinated the SAT for us but the catch was they scheduled it at 0600 on a Saturday. Mind you, nuke school is brutal and the last thing anyone wants to do is take another exam at 0600 on a Saturday. Just shy of 50 students signed up for the SAT but only 11 showed up, of which I was one.

The point? Like I said in my introduction, being stubborn has gotten me far!

You win the "avatar of the year" award, (which I just invented.) Some form of bent rubik's cube with a nuclear atom inside of it sort of thing. Only a nuke would have something like that :)
<--- Note the electron paths of the nuclear atom going around the sailing ship along with the sextant that the Eagle has beneath it.

Welcome! My 2024 has had amazing professors at USNA and has chosen a mentor. The conversations we have had about his professors and their leadership and willingness to mentor are amazing and you will be an excellent contribution to the forum and the Yard.

You can check multiple boxes of experience that will resonate with many a MIDN.
Welcome!
