I don't mean to sound greedy or anything but do cadets generally get military discounts from airlines? If so, how would this be done? Thanks!

Not a discount, but enter your military ID # when purchasing airline tickets and you may get TSA Pre, board in the group for military and/or lounge access. As a Doolie, you will be in uniform, but verify with airlines on the exact policy. It depends on airline, exactly how you are flying, and I may be mixing some of this up since my DD has lounge access and had TSA Pre prior to USAFA.

It's good you are thinking about how to get deals. For example, when you graduate (and if the rules stay the same), you can get the AMEX card with fee waived - the $695 one. Ask around the squadron for tips. You get 25% off at lululemon! Not really a military discount, but my DD loves the pick 3 for $10 at Chili's.

You can't get discounted price, but TSA pre check is absolutely amazing

Go to individual airlines’ websites and search for military baggage fee policy. A simple google search “x Airlines military baggage fee or military benefits” works. Here’s one:

The “military fare” may not be particularly cheap, but it may be changeable at any time without penalty. Read the fine print. That can come in handy.

Here’s how to use your CAC to get TSA Pre.

Not waived anymore. Big news around my Mids buddy’s friends at USNA. In fact, there was a poster here who got it, thinking it waived, probably didn’t read all that fine print, and is on for the fee…for some reason I’m thinking it was also increased to around $800 🤔

Yes, that is why I said graduate and continue to monitor...no longer waived for Cadets. Bummer!

ALL Academy students are considered active duty, and have a CAC Card with a ten digit ID, enter that number into the TSA "Known Traveler Number" and your ticket will process as TSA Pre-Check. If you join a "Rewards" program, enter that ten digit number into your profile and every time you buy a ticket the airline will process as TSA Pre-Check.

Like @gonavy14 said, the airlines do not offer a "Military Discount" unless it is Official travel through the travel office, but generally they get flexible flights (short notice changes without cost change), and a checked bag for free. Our sons' always pick the last non-stop flight home, then if they get out early or get to the airport early they can almost always change to earlier non-stop flights simply be going to the boarding gate and asking if there are available seats and showing their ID's.

Delta, AA and United all give military 5 free bags if on official orders. If for personal travel you get 2 or 3 bags depending on the airline. You also get to board the plane before most other people. You do not need to be in uniform for this perk. And sometimes United has been known to upgrade military to a seat in Economy plus or first class if available.
