Oh got_milk, thank you for your wise, and kindly-considered posts! Golly, in eight+ years, no one has ever pointed out any of my many flaws before. How gracious of you!

And, gee whiz, I don't normally like to spread my personal woes here, but I did just have my fifth major spinal surgery in 14 months this past April, so you're right: I do have a little extra time for these forums, since I can now sit up under my own power, for 22 minutes at a time. But I promise to get right back out behind the tractor just as soon as I am able.
 
The original post was a basic question which ultimately resulted in a lecture by several posters about how parents should give birth to their children, leave them in the wild, and if they survive they have done their job. When someone pointed out that it was just an innocent question...that didn't go over so well. Clearly, no one knows how each family works and there is not a single answer that will work in every situation. Is it even remotely possible to just sit back, take a deep breath, and answer a question without making assumptions?!

FM...I am so sorry for your recent surgery. Having gone through 3 ACL repairs I can certainly empathize. All the best.
