For Anyone Considering Varsity Athletics At USNA

Recruitment timelines depend on the sport. DS emailed coaches in early spring of junior year and filled out the recruitment questionnaire on the website. They emailed him back and he started to receive phone calls starting the first week of July.
I would not know how many athletes any particular coach can support. Likely commensurate with the specific sport?

DS also runs XC and track. As you know, being someone that logs a lot of miles, adapting to a different training shoe, particularly one with a significant heel toe drop difference, takes some time. With so much in emphasis on running during plebe summer, can you run in your personal training shoes or should DS try to transition to something else after track season? If so, what shoe? Thanks for your help.

bobbymiles - I saw the below in last year's "Important information for class of 2017" (I think this is sent in the Permit to Report pack in mid-April):

"NOTE 1 (RUNNING SHOES): All candidates will be issued
running shoes on I-Day; however, candidates are highly
encouraged to bring their own “broken-in” running shoes.
Candidates will be authorized to wear these running shoes during
physical training evolutions in order to cut down on medical
injuries such as shin splints and blisters. Recommend consulting
an athletic store that specializes in running to advise you on what
running shoe is best for your foot type."

I'm sure there will be a few changes for Class of 2018 but assume it will be similar in any case. Link below to the full doc:

I believe they wear there own as mentioned above. Our class and those before us did not. It was one of the major items we complained to leadership about when we were getting ready to take over as detailers When I ran detail they allowed Plebes to wear their own running shoes for PEP, have Gatorade at every meal, and anti-bacterial soap as part of the issued gear. Believe it or not, these three things were game changers. Allowing Plebes to run in their own "go fasters" cut down on shin splints like no tomorrow. Lets face it, no way one shoe is going to work for 1200 people. Gatorade helped reduce heat injuries by over 50%. Plebes drink so much water and sweat so much, but replacing those electrolytes and all those other fancy things help unbelievably. We were issued ivory soap when I was a plebe, but with as much as you sweat Plebe Summer, your skin grows some pretty unique things. The addition of anti-bacterial soap helped cut down on heat rash and all kinds of other fun things a great deal. Its amazing the small changes can make to keep people healthy and in training.
