Funny misconceptions about ROTC

My MIL, has pulled that with me when Bullet was in the service, even going as far as saying we were war mongers to other family members.

What is interesting is she always bragged about Bullet when he was sent to the badlands. HUH?

Are MILs great? It's funny how all this anger is directed towards ME...when she has a son who's a Navy Reserve officer.....she's a peach to him!

singaporemom, is your husband supportive of you by saying something to his mother about her behavior, or does he let you do all the dirty work? It always amazes me how many spouses stand by while their own parent is rude to their spouse.

I am very fortunate to have a wonderful MIL. Not only is she supportive of our son's ROTC participation, but she was a WAC (Women's Army Corps) herself in WWII.

Now that's a forerunner for you (WACs). My MIL wasn't allowed to join the WACs because her father didn't think it was appropriate for his daughter. I think she still wishes she could have joined.

my daughter has the predicament of choosing between SA and ROTC scholarship at her dream school. She has been given MUCH advice along the way.
One of her best friend's college educated mother said daughter should not attend Service Academy, so that she could get a college degree. Lady was under the impression that Service Academy meant "military boarding school" followed by enlistment in the Army without college degree. What?

Others have told daughter to attend ROTC school so that she wouldn't have to serve in the Army afterward!

Boy is there a lot of misconception out there!

Yes, he's very supportive. It just took me about 20 years to realize she acts differently to me than she does in front of my husband! So, I get all the crap with no witnesses. Email strings have saved the day and I can now save and forward her rants to prove my point. And now she's so brazen she says things to my friends, who report back. He's just a bit more gentle when he talks to her.

So, I guess the MIL just likes to take pokes at you then.

MIL's might get a bad reputation from that, you know? :yllol::yllol::yllol::yllol:

Oh, yes, she has been taking pokes at me since we were engaged! That's for a different forum!

It is amazing how much you tolerate until push comes to shove. Now that the kids are older, on their own path, there's not much left to say. And, no, she won't be invited to Parent Plebe Weekend!

Ive had people say "why would you join the army? i would NEVER be able to get through boot camp."
officers don't go through "boot camp"....

Well ROTC anyway. LDAC may count. Although you can join the Army and go through OCS which is like BCT only alot harder.

Plebe summer for the academies is boot camp! If you go to a Senior Military College, almost your entire freshman year is boot camp!

yes, but rotc cadets don't have to do anything as long or intense as that until ldac, which still technically isn't the "boot camp" that most civilians think of

rotcdonde, I guess the point I was trying to make is even officers go through a form of the intense, pressure cooker, standing at attention, getting yelled at training that people experience in "Boot Camp", too. It's just called something different.
