Junior year of high school, my father picked up a letter in the mail with "Department of the Navy, United States Naval Academy, Office of Admissions" on the top right corner. Long, complicated-looking English words. He had no idea what that meant and tossed it a pile of junk mail to be recycled. Luckily my mother (much more capable of reading English) had sharp eyes and noticed it before it was too late.
A year later, USNA was kind enough to send an explanatory letter translated to Chinese with my LOA. Parents read it, and the first comment was, "It's only ranked 14th nationally? That's not very good."
