My DD is hoping to win at least a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship. Of the "highly desirable" fields the only one she's interested in is " Meteorology/Atmospheric Sciences " but really wants to work as a Space Operations Officer. I told her that I was pretty sure that degree only leads to being a Weather Officer and that if she really wanted Space Ops she should consider something else. Is dad wrong here? Could she land a job in Space Ops with that degree?

You can get a degree in pretty much anything and become a Space Operations officer. However you MUST have a degree in meteorology to become a weather officer, thus it’s highly likely you’ll be picked to become a weather officer if you pursue meteorology.
Also keep in mind the Air Force is winding down it’s space operations career field as we speak. If you wish to pursue space operations, you must accept a commission in the newly created USSF.

I haven’t read the most recent list of acceptable majors to earn a scholarship so I’m not fully up to date, but if you’re trying to go into space ops a degree in something like Aerospace Engineering, Astronomy, or orbital mechanics would be best. However not having a degree in one of those fields certainly will not prevent you from going into space ops.
Honestly you can’t really go wrong with any of those majors. I’d say pick something in engineering. Not only will it help her in her career as an officer but she’ll have something to fall back on if she decides to leave the military. Even if she gets an engineering degree that has nothing to do with space she’ll still stand a good chance of getting into that career field with a technical background.
