Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

Same! We went around after school today with the police record check forms & self addressed stamped envelopes for mailing to USNA. DS introduced himself, and explained what he was asking for. They were happy to help. I went along since he is 17, in case they wanted parental consent.
Same..my DS went to the local police station in person and they were happy to help.

Created this as a place for appointees (Plebes To Be, P2B) and their parents to come with the inevitable questions that pop up every year.

Note NAPSters report in the day before I-Day to complete their transition.

Some handy links:

The USNA calendars:

Plebe Summer Home on usna.edu. Browse all pages and links. The Class of 2027 info will be updated for Class of 2028 in late spring. The basics usually do not change. The Permit to Report serves as the reporting-in directive.

USNA Parents Clubs info and locator. These are supported by the independent non-profit USNA Alumni Assn (www.usna.com). Local parents’ clubs often host appointee meet and greet events in the month or two before I-Day. Contact them. You will be welcomed. USNA does not distribute appointee names to them.

A look back at Class of 2027 I-Day!

First Tips:
- Go back and browse previous years’ I-Day threads, AFTER you have browsed Plebe Summer Home.
- Book hotels now. You and 1100-ish families are converging in a small town.
- Apply for tourist passport now. NOT required for I-Day, but a lot easier to get done now than while a plebe. Interesting opportunities will abound. Parents can bring/send after Plebe Summer.
Thank you for sharing the links to the calendars. This is helpful! Does anyone know when the most likely times for Midshipman to travel home during the summer months? I see Blocks 1, 2, & 3 during the summer, do all midshipman have responsibilities all 3 blocks? Does it vary by year or choice?

This will vary by Mid. Most have 2 blocks of training and 1 block of leave. They usually find their summer training blocks right before spring break (so last week). There is also a zero block that starts shortly after finals. A lot of athletes use this to maximize training as athletes tend to return to the yard early (especially fall athletes). Some will volunteer for additional training or summer school. Some will have a block that extends across two blocks. Some will have a block that is shorter. Always a mixed bag for each Mid.

^^
This is what my appointee did. Showed up in person, introduced himself, said was just appointed and asked cops to help with the form. Was congratulated, asked for ID and social, got form filled on the spot.
This is exactly what our DS did as well and it was filled out on the spot. It didn't hurt that he had just been all over the local news for receiving his appointment and signing his letter of intent.

We got the signed form after they did the police record check and uploaded ourselves on the USNA portal.

Should we go again and ask them to send to the USNA or we are good?

I think you’re good. I think instructions said it was preferred to have it mailed in by the agency, but uploading to the portal yourself is also acceptable.

Thinking about Thanksgiving travel for my plebe2be, this was posted in a MidMom&Dad fb group. What does “no midday break” mean for Tues Nov 26? Could I book a refundable flight out of BWI Tues evening?

They get all class periods done by midday that day. As soon as he finishes class on Tuesday or LMO (last military obligation), he is free to check out on leave.

You have to be careful about return time on Sunday. It has ranged from 6 pm until midnight over the last several years. Usually there is a stipulation flight must land 4 hours before expiration of leave, to allow for delays.

Yeah, better to err on the side of caution in each direction. Leave later, return earlier. Adjust as Semper Gumby kicks in.

Good to know about return time. I’ll make it for early in the day to be safe. Thank you!

He’ll be able to tell you what applies for this year - but not for several months. So the trade-off is saving money by booking now vs the known thing.

Something to aim for in future - you handle travel planning plebe year, train him up, then put him in charge of all future travel. He’ll learn by doing. Military people are experts at personal and professional travel, especially when hard-stop report times are involved. There is no better time to learn. He can start accruing miles on his own, as well.

Good Afternoon! DS received an appointment on 2/1, accepted it, and has all his documentation uploaded to the portal. At dinner with our BGO, he indicated we should be receiving i-Day instructions sometime in April. Has anyone else received them? If so, were they email or USPS? Thanks!

The additional instructions, called The Permit to Report (PTR) will come through his portal. I’m pretty sure he’ll receive an email too but almost all communication will be through the portal.

PTRs are usually emailed in early May with some pretty quick turn around deadlines, which is why we encourage candidates to look at last year’s and start working on gathering paperwork, appts, and legwork for needed vaccines, background checks, etc. May is a busy time to be a high school senior anyway. Report times for I-Day will be emailed the end of May.

This is usna.edu’s place to go for incoming plebe info - note Class of 2027 is still there. The pages will be updated over the next 2 months, but it is worth browsing through the PTR (Permit To Report), Parents Guide and all the links and menu items, to get a feel for the annual rhythm. Much of it does not change.

I always recommend applying for the tourist passport, if he doesn’t have one already. It is NOT needed for I-Day. It is a lot easier to apply now than after he is a plebe, and you can send it after Plebe Summer or hold it until he needs it. He will be ready to take advantage of international opportunities.

So turns out it's pretty hard to find Mids and NAPsters! I'm with the NM Naval Academy Parents Club and we're setting up our annual send off - which means we need to know if you exist! If you live in NM, are heading to Annapolis or Newport...or if you know anyone who is, please share the following. Thank you!

Congratulations on your appointment or NAPS offer! The Naval Academy Parents Club of New Mexico would like to welcome you aboard! We would like to encourage you (and of course your parents) to send us an email at usna.nm.parents@gmail.com so we can organize our annual send off before you report and share the group's events during your time in Annapolis and Newport. We also have a website at https://myusna.com/topics/9983/home for parents.
