Have any LOA's gone out for the class of 2019?

Would it be too late to receive an LOA? My counselor turned in my candidate activities record and candidate academic information just this week, but I've had everything else completed for a a while.

No. In fact, getting an LOA this early in the game is pretty exceptional. They can go out up until March/April. Don't worry.

For those with an LOA, when did you finish the application? And does anyone know if DoDMERB still shows the subagency:naloa for LOAs as I read about from past years?

I asked that question a week or so ago on the DoDMERB Thread and got the following response from "Pima", a regular on the forum:

"That loop closed and ended years ago when MullenLE was still here. He works for DoDMERB; created the help desk, and back 5-6 years ago on the DoDEMERB website it would show up as Appointee or scholarship recipient about 24-48 hours prior to the official notification.

Due to budget constraints pre/post sequestration, DoDMERB exams have changed. Prior to sequestration exams were given at a much faster pace. Now it appears to me that the commissioning source plays the chicken game.

IOWS, the source will be charged for the exam, but if another source orders it, they can get the results.
I.E. ROTC scholarship candidates that do not apply to an SA will most likely not get the order for an exam until awarded a scholarship, BUT if an SA candidate applies for a scholarship. ROTC can pick it up

Either way don't play Snoopy over the dog bowl to see if you are going to get an appointment or scholarship. Only be Snoopy to see if you got Q, Remedial or DQ? "

Hope this helps.

Focus on getting your packages complete (academy, nominations, medical). If an LOA comes, all the better. My daughter had an appointment in December two years back. Never had an LOA, but her packages were done which put in position to receive an appointment. Remember the only true golden ticket is the appointment itself.

I got my LOA on september 26th. Does anyone know how many LOAs are typically given out per USNA application year?

nr116 - You may see from digging around that there is no quota for LOAs and the number is at the discretion of the board. However, from researching this last year with DS it looked like consensus was around 200+/- LOAs per year based on BGO comments and statements forum members had heard from USNA admissions (at CVWs, etc.).

Basically, not very many get LOAs - maybe 15%+/- of appointees.

Congrats on yours!

For those that have received an LOA; congratulations!

My question is what was the status of your application. i.e. was your entire application finished to include BGO, Letters of Recommendation, DoDMERB or do you still have some work to do?

Also, can you post some stats so we can see what constitutes a standout candidate? Thanks!

Our son received his LOA Sept. 11th (stamped date). His application was submitted 100% by third week in August; now we are waiting on MOC nomination process to take place.

Dad of a 19' USNA hopeful

Naval Padre...congratulations on the LOA! My DS had his Packet with Nomination (Presidential) CFA with competitiv scores and BGO completed by August 13th...Has a SAT Math of 730 with CR at 670/ACT Math 34/English 32 with loads of ECs including Sea Cadets and he has not as of yet received an LOA. He is staying with being hopeful for LOA but understands that though LOA's are very exciting to have and shows that the USNA is interested, he has just as good of a chance without the LOA. He has been accepted by Plan B and C schools nust in case. Again, congratulations to all of class 2019 who have received LOA's at the early stage.

NavyMom19....very similar situation here with my DD who also has a Presidential nom, 750 CR, 690 Math, lots of ec's etc. CFA , DODMERB, BGO also complete. Someone on the forum though recently posted though that those with Presidential noms and ALL other steps completed would NOT receive an LOA but rather would be waiting for an appointment. So,,,I think you are in a wait by he mailbox for the BFE to show up between now and April. Good luck!!!

What were his sat/act scores ??

Astef67- his ACT scores where: Math 32/ Eng. 31. 4years: varsity swimmer; water polo, IB Mandarin and IB Spanish (on schedule to get IB Diploma), plus other EC outside school. He did attend this past year's Summer Session and was invited and attended a CVW (LOA arrived after we accepted visit and before he actually attended).

He was invited to meet the Dean of Admin. when he was in our home city (before CVW). Son said Dean stated that he left a very good impression with midshipments working SS and emphasized that goes a long way in the application process. I guess that reinforces the adage that nothing goes unnoticed when you are amongst the USNA folks.

Now for that MOCN...

I will echo this. If you have a nom, and are 100% complete on application to include DODMERB, there is no reason to send an LOA, because the LOA is just assuring you an appointment IF you finish what is remaining on your app. (ie get a Nom or qual on DODMERB) Both my 2014 grad and current 2016 mid were in the same boat as you both and rcvd Appointments in October. My DD2-2019 candidate- is in the waiting stage with your kids, but we realize she may be waiting until April, because a Presidential Nom does not mean she will get an appointment under that Nom.

last year one of the candidates from our local high school was appointed in Oct

For anyone feeling discouraged, if I got an LOA you can too. The essay matters a whole lot more than most let on, so make sure yours is well written. Also, I think summer seminar performance can also make a difference because on the back of my loa they hand-wrote me this "Great job at summer seminar! Your detailers said you were an outstanding candidate!"
