    Hi
Another question for those who have gone before: When my DS comes home for his first Thanksgiving and Christmas is he required to always wear his uniform when out in public? (C4C question)
    Regards
    John

No. The "uniform in public" is in place during PW. When the cadets are on leave, they can be in civilian clothes except when traveling to and from USAFA.

During our son's Doolie year he had to wear his blues from USAFA to his home airport for leave. He didn't have to wear it while at home on leave, although he did wear his blues to Christmas Mass with us (at our request). The same uniform requirement went for returning from his home airport back to USAFA. When he was a 3 degree up to Firstie he didn't have to wear any uniform at all while travelling.

Keep in mind that our experience is 5+ years old already. Things can and will change every year. Your cadet will know the current regs that they need to follow.

The C4Cs will know the rules. They will usually travel in uniform until recognition.

Hi John. As the others have said, your C4C will, most likely, be required to travel in uniform. It's not as bad as it sounds. My DS has had more upgrades to first class during his Doolie year than I can count. People are very respectful of the uniform and it warms my heart to see!

I believe, though, if you live within a 150(?) mile radius, you're required to remain in uniform in public, even when on leave.

When DS came home for Thanksgiving, we had a change of clothes at the airport and he was quite happy to change into some comfy sweats in the bathroom :)

    Hi
Thanks for the info as I am sure my DS will be happy to be out of uniform when he is in San Diego. Although I must admit I am dying to see him in dress uniform.......
    Regards
    John

I'm not entirely sure that's correct regarding uniforms on leave. We spent Thanksgiving in CO Springs due to sports, and because my daughter was on leave, she could be in civilian clothes, though she did go to and from the Academy in uniform when she went for practice. She was also in CO Springs during Christmas leave, again for sports, and did the same thing with no problem.
And travel to and from USAFA means that you get on the plane in your uniform, not just to the airport.

melindayching, that does make sense for the IC athletes. Maybe the uniform rule was for Parents Weekend only? I remember the discussion on these forums about leaving the 'general area' to be allowed to be out of uniform. Or I could be wrong altogether. Has happened before :)

Parkmom, I think you're right about the 150 mile rule but I think it applies to Parents Weekend only. There was discussion about whether going to Breckenridge or even Denver took you out of the vicinity.

We live 70 miles north of the Academy. For Thanksgiving and Chirstmas, they are on leave orders and once they are home then they are not required to be in uniform when they leave the house. When our DS was on a pass for the weekend, until Recognition, he had to be in uniform when away from the house. If on orders, no uniform away from the house. On a pass, must be in uniform away from the house. As mentioned above, the Cadet will know.
