Can someone tell me where a good place to stay while visiting the USMMA? I've been on the USMMA website- looked over these hotels and read some of the reviews. A few of these are really expensive others are ok but that is where the reviews are scary. My son is doing an overnight visit and we need a place to stay while we are there.
Thank you.

If you want convenience, the Inn at Great Neck is good. It may not be the least expensive but it is close, clean and convenient. We have stayed there several times and always run into other academy families there too.

I called and they are requiring a two night stay for this weekend, do you have a second choice?

The last couple times I stayed at the Fairfield Inn Syosset Long Island
It is about 30 - 40 away. Clean and reasonable.

Any of the hotels near LaGuardia airport are not too far away. 15 - 20 min.

If you want close, try the Adria Hotel on Northern Blvd. Right down the street from the Inn at GN.

I've had very good luck doing Price Line bidding. You can pick the level of hotel you want (3 stars, 3.5 stars, 4 stars, etc). First see what the nice hotels in the area are charging. Then try to bid about 60 -50% of that price. Also, Weschester County is only 25 minutes away and there are several hotels there although you will have to pay to cross either the Whitestone or Throggs Neck Bridges to get back to Long Island, but it gives you other options. And the drive is not bad. Look along I-95 toward New Rochelle and White Plains. Good Luck!!

As noted the two closest are the Andrew and the Inn at Great Neck. Both are fine, but relatively expensive and as you note the Inn at Great Neck often requires a two night stay.

The Marriott properties in Uniondale and Syosset are 15-25 minutes away by car and traffic isn't bad outside of rush hours, though if you are not familiar with driving in the NY Metro that can be intimidating.

The Adria wouldn't be my second choice though if money is a larger concern it might become so, it too isn't that far from the Academy.

Staying around LaGaudia is both expensive and there aren't a lot of places to eat, etc. there. It is easy to get to KP from there and convenient but I look elsewhere when I am willing to spend that sort of $$$ for my preferences.

My second choices other than Marriott properties (I travel a lot and stay in them often) would be the hotels and inns around Manhasset and Roslyn. They are relatively convenient to Kings Point (off a major east-west road - Northern Blvd/Rt-25A), and they are in very good areas so you will feel safe and enjoy the time you stay there while your DS/DD is at the Academy for their overnight visit.

If these aren't in your "swim lanes" for whatever reason feel free to PM me. I've lived in the area in the past and have and do travel up to the area fairly often for both business and personal reason.

Not sure how far you are willing to drive, however, since we began coming to KP we have zoned in on The Glen Cove Mansion. It is pricy by my standards, but not by NY standards. About $200 per night. HOWEVER, we have been successful in getting Priceline deals of $90 per night. We already have Parents Weekend secured for three nights. at $99 per night. Check it out here : http://www.glencovemansion.com/

It is about a 20-30 min. easy drive to KP.

More KP Hotel Options

Excellent advice above. I've tried most of the places in and around KP, GN, LGA and other LI locations.

I've stayed at The Andrew a few times. Mostly OK, but pricey, no business center, fitness center or other amenities. They also charged me for minibar items I did not eat or drink, AFTER I had checked out. I just happened to be reviewing my corporate card the next day. Took me several phone calls to straighten it out. And, that fancy mineral water on the desk - it's $$$.

I'm at KP 5-6 times a year on business. Since I come up from Maryland and leave early AM to head home, I usually stay in Garden City/Westbury on LI, right off the Meadowbrook Parkway, Exit 1, Old Country Road. Depending on time of day during the work week, it's about 30 minutes north on Meadowbrook to Northern to LIE westbound and off at Lakeview exit to GN and KP.

There are plenty of business properties in that area: Hampton Inn on 1 North Ave. (only 2 years old, with a pool, free business center, free hi speed internet, Hilton property, my current fave), Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn, Wingate Inn off Meadowbrook Exit 3 (Wyndham chain), Uniondale Marriott (free full-size health club and large pool on ground floor) and others. This area also has the large Roosevelt Field Mall (Nordstrom's, Bloomies), a discount outlet area, 2 movie theater complexes (one 2 blocks from the Hampton), Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang's, California Pizza Kitchen and other major chains, as well as some fine NY delis, local Italian places, bagel places, some 24-hour diners, donuts, you name it. I think I've just given away everything I like to do when traveling on business...

We stayed at the Andrew this past weekend. It was rather expensive and not as nice as you would have expected for the price. Loud parties and thin walls...

We will stay farther away next time.
