How many PCS moves did you do

OH BTW when were you at Cannon?

Went to there in '98 had 3 friends there--OG, DOG and LOG wives. Came for a visit left thankful that we weren't there. The cow smell was sicking. It was a '16 base not a 111 at the time.

We have Strike friends(beagle), they were standing up the RTU at Luke when spouse was a '16 IP. My spouse was the programmer they called looking for empty backseats when their planes got delayed from the factory. That was a fun place to be 4 F-16 SQs and 4 F-15 SQs on the same base. Some crazy friday nights at the club.

I to was a brat spent many years at places the don't exist.

Born at Bunker Hill AFB (became Grissom)
Tachikowa Japan
Dad Vietnam til he got hit by a shell
Williams AFB
Sheppard AFB
Lowery AS
Nellis --9 years
Williams AFB-- got married there it now a college campus.

We had a good friend from Torrejon who left for Homestead took 30 days leave and then Hurricane Andrew hit after a lot of phone calls he end up at Nellis. His HHG took 4 months to catch up to him.

My Son knows the life, he isn't sure he wants to be a lifer.

Our very best friends were stationed at Willy for UPT after grad. from the AFA...84 or 85. Too bad the AF closed them down, but left Del Rio. Also had friends who were at Shepherd for UPT in 87-88. Then we had friends who were at Nellis in 2001-2004, and T-Bird guys from the strike that were there in 2003-2006.

We knew someone (F-16 pilot) who was assigned to Clark in the f-4 when the volcano blew(lost everything except what they could put in a suitcase) PCS'd to Homestead, and as soon as they moved into their base house Hurricane Andrew hit...ugggh! They had to file 41 pages for their lost items.

To all new cadets with no military background, THE VERY WORSE THING YOU WILL EVER HAVE TO DO IS FILL OUT THE DAMAGE REPORT FROM PCSING. Can't tell you how many times I would be in the kitchen and search for some item 6 mos. after we moved, to only realize it was stolen.

Our favorite story, one of our friends had their DVD player stolen, but they forgot to take the remote:yllol:

Or the one with the guy who showed up from Germany and when they unbanned the crates, rocks came rolling out...OUCH!

Get used to the fact that if any item is over 6 mos. old they depreciate it 20%, over 18 mos 40%, over 30 mos 60%. (they broke our VCR...Bullet spent over 900 on it in 90, what they gave us was 300) Now some movers will require you to turn on all of your electrical equipment to prove that they work, this includes DVD, xbox, stereo's, tivos, etc.

Our worst move was when they lost crystal given to us by my father as a wedding gift 12 yrs earlier...their response was to get my Dad to find the receipt to reimburse us...my response...If I could talk to my Dad and ask him anything that would be the last thing, since he died 2 years ago...OOPS sorry, just try to find something comparable  Or the time they dropped our grandfather clock that we bought in the UK on the driveway....shattered all of the glass.

Zaphod, yes I am a realtor. I work in the beltway for VA. It really has not effected the military, because the house prices in 2 yrs have leveled, people are not going to walk away with the 100K as they were in 2005. They however, will be able to walk away with what they went in with and maybe a couple of grand....remember they also got a nice tax deduction ea. yr that they would not have had if they rented. ALso because interest rates have gone up, but housing prices went down, BAH has remained higher and many people will still take a 3/27 arm Int. Taxes only, knowing that they will sell in 3 yrs, and the arm will not move untile the 1st day of the 4th yr. In VA, the are hit hardest would be the expensive homes in Stafford/Fredericksburg, b/c Quantico does not get the same BAH, and thus people going to the Pentagon will move closer, and the price has declined. For where we live in at SJ, the base lucked out with the latest BRAC, and we are getting more people, so the housing price is still trending upwards. In the end, as a realtor with military background, make sure you buy in the best school district, because that will always be the biggest draw. Second biggest is a home in an HOA development with pool/tennis court. Truth be known the spouse typically makes the decision, I can't tell you how many times I will hear the wife say you won't be home (i.e. deployed) and I want this...common response...let's write a contract!

Just_A_Mom, I have seen the Signal Corps Mess Dress uniform - their color is a Clemson orange and could never be mistaken for salmon!

I am enjoying the stories. :thumb:

Ahhh! My eyes! My eyes! Owwwww!!!!!! Antoinette! You can't say "Clemson Orange" here! OWWWWW My eyes!!!!

Just trying to be descriptive  How about setting-sun-over-the-Pacific orange, Tigger orange or even hot lava orange instead?

Okay I now know for a fact that my daughter will marry a signal officer in the Army. Why? She wants to go to Clemson (don't even go there Bullet is a Terp grad) and she wants to marry a military officer. Our DS is very determined, and I can see it already, she will want her husband to have her alma maters colors:shake: Seriously, I can see her telling him he needs to be in Signal Corps. Of course she wouldn't care what that means, as long as the color is right:rolleyes:

Got to love that kid...most frightening fact it will probably happen

BTW how can salmon be even a color, isn't it on the pink side?

Stupid question are cables the same as forges...The cords worn on the shoulder. AF officers don't have them, ROTC does, but not AD.

To all of the parents...just wait until they wear their mess dress. It is very funny, because everyone I know brings out the ruler to measure everything. Bullet still does it. It is the only time that it takes a guy longer to get ready than a woman

Here's another key piece of advice...DO NOT SEND THE MESS DRESS TO THE BASE DRY CLEANERS. Last year for the AF Ball, I went and picked up Bullet's mess dress on a Thursday (Ball was on Sat). He always spends the night before putting on his ribbons, medals, flight and jump wings (the ruler is involved). He spends about 30 - 45 min. doing this, puts on the jacket, and looks at me...Honey don't the arms seem short? Takes off the jacket and it is a 42S. Bullet wears a 42 R. I go to the cleaners on Friday and they tell me that's his...are you kidding me, my husband didn't shrink. As I stand there and argue, other guys are picking up their jackets, and now looking at the size. Bullet spent the night showing everyone by sticking his arms out. I spent the night looking for the guy drowning in a jacket. We never found him, but the BX manager finally agreed and gave him a new jacket on Monday.

Well I'm glad I never joined the AF!! In 20 years I PCS'd 8 times. I did manage to play my cards right and I spent 5 years at DoDMERB, otherwise there would have been at least one more move.

Now 2 of those years were on a floating museum that the Navy felt should never be in port, lest it sank at the pier. Another 9 years was spent with the Marines, so there wasn't much time at home either. So if you don't count 6 month deployments, months in the field, 9 months in Saudi for Desert Storm/Shield, I really didn't have it to bad!

Go Navy!!

Please expand!

The USS Midway CV-41, commissioned in 1945. I served on her from '87-89 when she was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. At the time she was the oldest active aircraft carrier in the fleet. She really is a museum in San Diego now.

Of the 25 months I was on board we were at sea for 16 of those months. So not much time in port.

She was my first permanent duty station after schools. Quite an experience!!

Actually starting this spring this has changed. I am currently setting up my PCS move (third in five years with fourth in six years coming six months after that). Now with all CONUS PCS moves Full Replacement Value will be paid. Not to tell on myself too much, but let's just say I did a little dance when I heard that. :thumb::thumb:

Why only Conus? Are they paying it or deferring it to the insurance companies. I remember back in 93 when they changed the rule that if your stuff was stolen, you had to claim it on your insurance first, and then they deducted it from your list. I am so glad that we only have 1 more move:thumb:

I believe they are phasing it in for all moves; however, CONUS moves are the first I believe to be included. I'm not sure when OCONUS moves will be included, but it looked like sooner rather than later.

The reason for the change has to do with a new contract with the moving companies I believe. They now require you to file the claim with the moving company first instead of the military first. (Or something like that, I haven't read all the fine print just yet.)

Here's a VERY small number of moves, based on the fact that I will be finishing this first tour here soon.

Went from USCGA to cutter in the summer of 2006. Summer of 2008 I should be transfering out.

In general afloat billets are 2 or 3 year billets (EOs may be the only 3 year billets for commissioned officers afloat). Ashore billets are generally 3 years, staff billets are generally 3 years, and I believe aviation billets are 3 or 4 years, but don't quote me on that.

That's for the Coast Guard. You can short tour, and some billets are only a year, but the vast majority are between 2 and 4 years.

I may not be in the military yet, but my dad is so for what it's worth, here we go. I'm kind of sketchy on the parts before I was born, but I'll try my best and correct myself later if something is wrong.

-USCGA '84
-Hawaii on a 378 for I think 3 years
-Pensacola for flight training
-ATC Mobile for more training
-Air Station Houston, TX for 3 or 4 years (Flying 52's if I remember correctly... would've been '89-91ish)
-ATC Mobile as an instructor for 3 or 4 years (too little to remember)
-USCG HQ in Washington, DC for 2 years
-USMC Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA for 1 year (no move req'd)
-Air Station Traverse City, Michigan for 3 years
-Group Humboldt Bay, CA for 2 years
-Air Station Detroit, MI for 2 years
-USCG District 9 Cleveland, OH (DRM for 2 years, moving to boss' job summer '08 for however long so no move req'd)

definitely a lot of cool places... CA and Traverse would have to be my favorites!
