This happened with our son last year. As it was described to us, essentially your NROTC package will get looked at before the reviews start in August. The local recruiters recommend this for students who seem assured to get a scholarship, in their estimation. It actually backfired on our son, though. He had his application completed by late June, the local recruiters send it to Millington with paperwork for this early process. The NROTC packages are reviewed (apparently to make sure they're complete?) in Millington before they are passed along to Florida for a determination. While in Millington, our son's two sets of paperwork got separated and stayed separated and unattended for a few months. Our local recruiter only knew that everything was on track as far as he was aware. We were therefore surprised that August and September came and went with no word. In October my husband was in Millington on military business and made an inquiry. Son's paperwork was then "found" and passed along to Florida and he received his scholarship at the next board. I'm not sure what would have happened had we just continued to trust that everything was "on track". My suggestion to you is follow up if you have been recommended for this and don't receive word after the first board. I would also suggest that you look at your schools you're applying to, call their NROTC Units and find out when they usually fill up. Our son switched a couple of times and it's much easier to switch late to some units than others. The other thing we would have done differently is have him apply as a Tier 3 major even though he is likely to major in a Tier 1 or 2. However, I only recommend this if you are a very very strong candidate and want max flexiblility in choosing a major.
