My DS and I attended an admissions event toady. One of the things mentioned was that the applicant could request an interview. Is this a good idea?

CGA usually will request interviews for the applicants in the middle. They are good quality applicants (so they've made it through the initial pass), but aren't necessarily one of the stand-outs. For all of those applicants, CGA wants to get a bit more information. The interview is used to get a feel for the applicants passions, why they want to serve in the Coast Guard, how do they come across in person (or in zoom), will they be a good shipmate, does the interviewer feel they would be a good fit? If your son feels like he would excel in an interview and might need that extra push, then he could request one. Or, if he feels like he didn't have space to say everything he wanted to say in his application, then he could request one.
The interviewers do NOT have a copy of the application, so they are starting from a blank slate. The applicant can share as much as they like if they feel it will help them, but the point is for the interviewer to start from zero. The interviewer only grades the interview itself and nothing else, but their input does get added into the package.
