If my DS is eligible for the presidential nomination, will it hurt him to begin the application process this late in the game? Also, he is committed to commissioning Navy after graduation. I've read that the majority of USMMA graduates primarily go into the merchant marine field...with regards to admission, does it help or hurt (or neither) the candidate to reflect commitment to Navy service upon graduation?

About 2/3 graduates do go into the Merchant Marine..that is what the school was designed for. They still must take a reserve commission, however, and most usually go into the Navy Reserve.

What do you mean when you say your son is committed to going into the Navy upon graduation? I see a lot of kids come into INDOC thinking they want to go into the Marines, Air Force, Army, etc. and then throughout their four years at the Academy they see the kind of money you can make in the civilian maritime industry and they change their mind. Life is very unpredictable, especially for kids 18-22, who more often than not change their minds at least once while in school.

Absolutely! That is very possible but as of now, he hasn't applied to USMA or USAFA because he doesn't want to be in the Army or Air Force and has identified he only wants a Naval career. I'm certain that exposure to other possibilities may broaden that perspective.

    93 Sir,
The Application deadline is 1 March however, a nomination is also required (amongst other things). Each Member of Congress (MOC) has a different deadline and those deadlines may have very well passed for the Class of 2019.

Candidates must be nominated to the USMMA by a U.S. Representative or Senator. Candidates may only be nominated by qualified authorities from their state or territory. As mentioned earlier, no Presidential noms at USMMA and no VP nominations either.

A candidate does not have to reside in the same Congressional District as his/her nominator (a Member of the U.S. House of Representative CAN nominate a candidate who resides in a District other than their own, as long as it is in their (the nominator's) State/Territory.) This differs from nominations to the USMA, USNA, and USAFA.

It all depends on where you live. If you live in the North East or another big USMMA state you are probably out of luck but if you live in a state that does not have a ton of USMMA applicants than the Members of Congress may have a little more flexibility on the deadlines. If your son is a strong candidate, I would suggest that he call all the MOCs even if the official deadline has passed.

Deadlines are passed. Your son should get on this site and read all the threads.
