Earlier this week I received an email from a first class midshipman asking to meet with me and one other candidate over Thanksgiving Break. I was wondering if this is a positive sign and if so, how good of a sign is it? Any answer would be helpful.

DD has been told that she will have the opportunity to do the same thing just before Thanksgiving break officially begins. As a parent, I think that any contact from USNA is a good sign. I also think that this is a great opportunity to ask questions and show your enthusiasm for USNA. Bottom line though, the process will play out based on the strength of each candidate's application and ability to secure a nomination.

I was actually wondering the same thing. My BGO sent me an e-mail asking when would be a good time for me to meet with a Mid who would be in town over Thanksgiving Break. Let's hope it IS a good sign.

Maybe they only give these out to a few candidates per state, but this is just speculation.

These inquiries are coming from midshipmen who have been selected to participate in the Thanksgiving OPINFO program. They are positive indicators for those who have been contacted for a meeting as the OPINFO program is developed by Admissions. My best advice to the candidates is put your best foot forward.

    Good luck and best wishes.

I am guessing that this is a recruiting tool used by USNA to keep the candidates interested and excited about continuing the process. I would also guess that midshipmen that have been assigned this task are matched with candidates that live in their area. I certainly wouldn't take it as a bad sign if you are not contacted, it may be that you simply don't have a midshipman in your area that has been assigned to contact candidates.

Edit: I was still typing when the above 1964BGO message was posted. Thanks for your input 1964BGO.

So is it Admissions who chooses which candidates get to meet with the midshipmen? Or does it have to do with location, or your BGO, or...?

Actually they offer the mids an extra day or two off from the Academy to visit their high school, and sometimes a function hosted by the BGO. It is a great way to speak to someone first hand, and have your questions answered by someone face to face. It is a great opportunity, please take advantage of it. We went to one hosted by our USAFA liason last year, and as a hesitant Mom...I left there with no reservations about the decision my son had made of what he wanted to do with his life. He actually chose USNA, had appointments for both. I had already read about the USNA offering the extra days over holidays to upperclassmen. It was so important that we attended, we cut our out of state vacation short just to make it back in time. You will not regret it I am sure. Enjoy, and take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere to meet face to face with someone that has been through what you are all going through now.
