Hello again,
I’m aware that KP hosts a variety of athletic clubs. My main two hobbies are mountain biking and snowboarding. After INDOC, what exactly are the logistics of getting, storing and using my gear at KP? What opportunity will I have to be able to go out and participate in those activities? Is there a functioning mountain biking club?

I don't think mountain biking can be accomplished on campus; snowboarding maybe once the flakes fly and there is a nearby park but access would require liberty. During INDOC you will likely have little if any time for such activities. That gives you plenty of time to scope out what activities will be available post-INDOC and you can plan accordingly when you return from leave that occurs around the holidays. As far a facilities, I'm from 1965, and we had storage lockers available. They were primarily for storage of gear that may have been out of season, white uniforms for instance aren't needed in winter, or for storage of personal effects during sea year. I can't say positively, but I would suspect that similar type facilities exist. Whether they are large enough for a mountain bike or snowboard is another matter. Again, scope it out after you get there.

There are still storage lockers, but theft occurs frequently from there. Your two hobbies are not going to be very available to you during plebe year because your leave is so limited until recognition in the spring. I would wait until fall break to see what you have time for and how strict your company is with plebe rates (privileges.)

Theft seem surprising. In my days they were lockable and during Sea Year you not might access the contents for several months.

I would concur with what the others have said above.. It's probably best to wait until at least the Fall break before attempting to bring any of that gear to school.. and depending on how well you're doing academically [where your main focus should be] it might be even be better to wait until after recognition or later.

@John from PA, when I was at APL I sailed Chief Mate for a couple of your classmates.. Captain Mike Stuhlsatz and Captain Scott Robson.. As I recall Scott was the RC, correct?
Scotty indeed was the RC and lived for many years in Hawaii. He passed away in September 2016. Mike Stuhsatz has also passed, sometime in October 2021. Both guys were fantastic individuals!

Yes, I had read that they had both passed away.. I loved sailing with Mike; Scott on the other hand took some getting use to, but he was still a good guy.. and yes, Scott lived on Kauai, up around Princeville.. Mike had been retired for some time and he and his wife owned an apple orchard up in Camino California.. Although I never sailed with him Captain Gary Schmidt was another of your classmates sailing for APL.. He was skipper of the MV PRESIDENT JACKSON..

Excuse me for being naive, but theft is an actual problem at KP?? I know not everyone is likely going to follow the honor code but I heard stories from an air force academy alum who said people would just leave their backpacks and stuff in common areas because nobody is stupid enough to get caught and risk their whole career. So I guess it’s just hard to believe an entire bike would be stolen. But anyway, thank you so much for the info. I was under the impression that clubs were treated like sports, where your “practice” or participation (if off campus) wasn’t bound by rates and such.

Gary too passed away

I too am a bit surprised at theft on campus. In my day (KP 1965) we did not even have the ability to lock our rooms! You could stow thing in your room locker which could be secured with a padlock. Of course the most valuable things back then amounted to a radio and perhaps a typewriter.

Only mids live under the honor code. In my opinion KP is the most open SA. If there is theft it’s not by default being committed by a mid.

I have no idea what you mean by "the most open SA" so I'm going to ignore that comment, but what they mean is it's super common for people to leave items they value in the baggage lockers and then forget they exist or leave the academy without them. So there is a huge culture of "If it's in the locker with no name and no claim, I can use it" so people use things that are left behind or left unlabeled. I have never had a problem with anyone actively committing theft, people will use things they find in lockers if they've been there for awhile and they're unlabled. PCs do locker cleanouts every trimester to prevent this and people usually are able to take the unclaimed stuff then too.

People will leave their bags and stuff out in public spaces and no one would ever steal out of it because they know that it belongs to someone. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread.

Good luck during indoc.

So for instance civilians at USAFA attend Mass at the cadet chapel, but have no access to cadet areas, absent library via a civilian entrance and athletic areas, and I think Harmon hall. When I go to USMMA the access is not as limited. Just my opinion that KP is just more accessible in more areas.
