January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

MaristCollegeROTC -- good info. That fits in the 20%-30% reduction I'm guesstimating for NROTC on another thread, based on the comment by a LT at a very large and decorated NROTC Batallion: "our budget is cut way back this year".

Did you have any sense about whether this Board's 25% reduction will carry forward to the 28Feb Board?

Scholarship Reduction

I believe that the trend will continue through each subsequent board. A percentage of the 4 year scholarships will be converted to 3 year scholarships. Some will simply disappear due to lack of funding. There is currently a shortfall of over $50 million dollars.

Thank you for sharing your insight. Disappointing to hear the scholarships are being reduced, but budget issues I completely understand  50million puts my household budget shortfall into context.

But you can't just print more money to solve YOUR household budget shortfall! (at least, I hope you don't...)

Done correctly the ROTC program can help save money. Make it an in-State only to save on tuition fees....change the commitmant to eight years.

There are lots of things they can do to cut costs.

You have that 100% right, the cost of college has way more than doubled in the past 30 or so years... But the "cost" for ROTC has been the same - in terms of number of commitment years. Link

Marist College ROTC,

You stated that the scholarship numbers for the Jan. board look to be cut from 1000 to 750. Do you have the number of scholarships that were awarded on the Oct. board. If the trend is to continue to subsequent boards after the Jan. board wouldn't that mean only the last board in Mar.

Scholarships Cut

There would be at least 1 smaller board after that to make selections to fill the spots of those that were offered scholarships but turned them down.

Losing 250 places for the January board is very bad news for anyone that has already applied. The cut off line generally gets reduced from board to board. With 250 rollovers and the new applicants in the mix the chances os being picked up after the next board are greatly reduced.

February 2nd

In light of the scholarship cuts, reminded DS the goal is Army Officer, not ROTC scholarship cadet. More than one path leads to the goal.

Hope all of you and your families are doing okay - dig out from the snow and ice and have a good day.

New to the forum and have a question. Does anyone know approximately how many students apply for a scholarship? You keep referencing how many scholarships are being offered, but that is not useful without knowing how many people are being considered at the same time. I apologize if this has been answered or discussed previously.

We are making plans without the ROTC scholarship. Our DS is also committed to a military career as well. Being free of ROTC commitments through school will allow for extra classes to graduate early. The health scholarship for post grad might be better for his preferred field anyway.

I think they get over 30,000 applicants. I know the local college have 280 board elligable candidates that listed them has first choice school.........they will have around 25 in the freshman class.

Thanks!

FloridaDad,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I had no idea the numbers were that huge, seems an extremely long shot, indeed.:frown: Guess we'll know before too much longer.

I think you had a one in four shot once you were board elligable in the past. This year with the cuts and high number of applicantsit will be much tougher.

Not an AROTC mom, but that would sound right about the 30K, because of 2 reasons why.

1. Approximately 10K plus will apply for WP. Traditionally these candidates apply for AROTC as back up plans.

2. They are the largest military branch with about 1.1 million serving (AD, Guard and Reserve). That means they have more trying to go this route.

I also heard they have 5K ROTC cadets nationwide, that would be 1 in 6 that gets a scholarship. Which puts it at the avg.

Remember some candidates will apply AFROTC and NROTC along with their AROTC application.

Although these numbers seem daunting, historically AROTC gives the most scholarships. According to some posters in the know, the only thing to be truly worried about is that it appears they will be like their sister branches and offering fewer scholarships this yr. This has to do with the DOD slashing their budget more than anything else. Gates is not about to slash an operational budget without slashing the ROTC budget.

Is that 25 scholarship students? If it is the one school, then that is an increase over last year.

Yet, if you do stats, that is still very competitive compared to the national avg. 25 out of 280 is about 9%, national avg (1 in 6) would put you at about 16%.

I may have missed Florida's DS's number 1 choice, but BN size matters. Take Texas A & M, I am not a betting woman, but I would bet their BN is bigger than FSU. Thus, they would have more scholarships than a smaller BN.

Than there is the flip side, some colleges like A&M have name recognition with the military, hence more candidates applying, thus, the competition is stiffer from a % point, even though they have more scholarships, the number allowed can hurt the candidate.

That's the AROTC and NROTC system. It is tied to the school. You can get in as a student, but because of the competition you may not find yourself with a scholarship.

Applicants =

Remember that applicants is the number that start the process but many never finish even the application process let alone the other needed components.
