. . . doing laundry . . .

I expect that you'll still have PLENTY opportunities for doing your DS's laundry, Ksmom -- especially when he comes home on breaks with a trunk-load of stinky clothes!! You'll have a whole MONTH of that sort of satisfaction!! :thumb:

I have to say, this forum has become my shoulder...

DS is our oldest and first to graduate. I cried on the first day of Kindergarten, Middle School and High School; these days it is the smallest of tasks that bring me to tears. Buying his socks, doing laundry, etc..someday these won't be mine to do; so I think college move in will be unbearable for me. :frown:

It is different with the 1st...I was much more emotional during DD senior year, I started a new "tradition" for her, I wrote a letter that started in January or so and went thru to graduation day...odds and ends about her new adventures and my letting go...I gave it to her as a gift. She tells me she reads it on days like today when she's having doubts about her plans and she just needs a little mom time...today the letter wasn't enough, so she called me. Maybe writing that type of journal/letter would help for you and DS. Mostly, live those moments of sadness(just like you did for kindergarten etc...)you only get to parent each child once, soak up the good and the "bad".

love your new quote KSmom -- I forgot about the Corrie books - I read them as a child....powerful stuff.

and then there is the laundry...there are NEVER enough quarters for the washer/dryer...send lots of them and often, and yes, tons still comes home every visit, plus you cook all their favorites and talk way too late at night, but worth every yawn the next day.

Can't tell you how many times the kids wanted to talk until 1 or 1:30 and I finally had to say, "I have to go to work in the morning." Learned long ago that quality time came from the quantity of time spent together.

Definitely that time of year when I find myself thinking, this will be the last one of
(fill in blank) that I'll ever see, watch, experience.

Actually the laundry problem is:

They come home with school colors and inevitably they are bold colors.

Red, Green, Black, Yellow or Orange, so you know that you must wash them separately.

JUST WAIT...when they come home they will bring their ROTC uniform home too.

You will look at the collar and start to gag! If you are old as me you will remember the WISK ring around the collar commercial...I think they used ROTC shirts!

Things to start thinking about for them...pack TIDE TO GO PENS and shoe shine kits.

Just wait until they have to do a lot of laundry due to having to always wash their PT clothes. My son only received 1 pair of shorts that is required for all 3 days of PT. PT and the hot humid weather in Florida sure does make it interesting for a young man that is used to his mom always doing his laundry!
He actually came home at winter break without much laundry because he did it all at school before he left!

For parents that are military or retired their PT gear is the same as AD, so you can buy it on line or on post.

Sorry non-military parents.

Amazing as this may sound, I am presently having the BEST quality time with my DS right now, better than EVER!! Regardless of how everything turns out, my DS has his sights on the commissioning path -- USMA or ROTC walk-on, whatever! My DS has even managed to drag me out of my lounge chair, and we now go down to the gym every other night for PT in preparation of his experience in the coming months. Yes . . . PT!!

It's been a while since I was on active duty, and I had forgotten even how to spell PT!! I expect that I will miss, but fondly remember, these remaining few months with my DS for the rest of my life. Plus, PT is good for folks at any age. :thumb:

Newbie with info??

Ok, this is my first time replying, but I have LOVED reading everyone's comments!! My DD is applying for a Nursing AROTC and we have a friend in the Military that has helped us along. I asked him recently if he had any info and we just got an e-mail from him with this:

Cadet Command is supposed to come out with the scholarship announcements
next week. XX is tracking DD as one of their prospects and will be
notifying her when it comes out.

Like everyone else, I'll believe it when I see it and hear it, but am hopeful this is accurate information :thumb:

We have 2 son's, this will be the last one to head off to school. As odd as it may sound, I think it will hit me harder when he leaves. So much time was spent going to Track, Crosscountry, Band concerts, Boy Scouts, and so many other activities. Luckily my wife has signed us up for all sorts of things, some I can't even pronounce.

What like PILATES? :shake:

wow, so I am missing the party...

good laugh, at Pima's ring around the collar reference, great advice about the Tide to go, shoe and I would add basic sewing kit(DS can sew a button/snap back on if need be...)also suggest: pizza pan, cutter & oven mitt(DD has been the hit of the dorm for having the basics...it can even double as a break and bake cookie sheet)

PE clothes, wear them into the shower, wash as your remove - hang dry in room...shampoo will be fine. DS only has 1 pair of compression shorts...does this everyday with those too.

Also think when my youngest (DD 15,sophomore) leaves it will be different, but she may live here and commute - still time - but I do enjoy having more time to be with DH and look forward to the next part of our marriage -- empty nest.... Scouts, band, color guard, swimming, soccer and all that was great too.

Welcome Cowsort10, sometime next week works for me -- but wouldn't that be close to the March 1 thing(THANK GOODNESS FEBRUARY IS THE SHORTEST MONTH!!!:yllol:)

and finally, yes, my DS asked me to start running with him way back when he got started. I laughed so hard I hurt myself. Good for you Patent for going to the gym with him and building some great memories for BOTH of you:smile:

almost forgot: Pima, why sort those colors, do you really think they bother at school? DD does 2 types of loads: white and everything else.....

patentesq is watching CNN right now and getting increasingly concerned about a government shut-down and the implications that will have on the January 4, 2011 AROTC Board announcement.

When I advised my DS at the beginning of this process that he should cast his net broadly (in terms of applying for all SAs and all ROTCs) because so many intervening events could happen totally beyond his control and totally unrelated to his credentials, I never imagined this scenario!

Sorry non-military parents.

So our friend who is retired can get us another pair of the Army running shorts?
His son who is also ROTC but at another school has more than one pair.

Not watching CNN, but have had an impending sense of doom... my understanding of the events isn't as informed as yours, but it doesn't take rocket science to see this is pretty darn serious and given certain over zealous parties involved(both sides of the aisle) this could happen simply as a polictical trap to try and out spin the other side......2012 elections are already taking place in a lot of the planning already in play. Sorry to be a downer/conspiracy theory sounding illiterate but it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck.....

Glad your DS has his appointment if all else goes south, you know my DS has a sound back up too, I just hope I'm really, really wrong - along with a lot of other worriers and someone pulls a surprise budget out of the hat.

so...maybe I'll join the party. Waiting on all fronts (ROTC's and Academies). DS is just floating through his Sr. year, not a care in the world. I teach and see our college counselor (my psychiatrist) daily and check in on this thread. If I could be thankful about anything through this long, long wait, it is that DS just goes merrily along. He has sports, and robotics to keep him busy and he's not concerned. Just keeps saying, "Either I get it or I don't". He knows that it could mean going to the in-state college and paying for at least the first year. He is our oldest. Admittedly, the dynamics are a bit different as he is in my Calculus class. Ah well...the sun comes up, the sun goes down and in the end we will all have answers. Good luck to all! And may June get here fast!

SMP

My DD has been waiting along with everyone, and this board is soooo appreciated.

Recently my DN joined the US ARMY, and will be leaving for his Basic Training in July. (VERY PROUD)

While at the Recruiters office I spoke with the Recruiter in charge of SMP, as there were 4 Cadets there from USF earlier. I asked why they were considering SMP and what were the benefits. He was explaining, that although contracted, there was only so much money in the budget for the Leadership Course (sorry forgot the name) required for commission. He said Cadets must go throught that course, or basic training, in order to be commissioned. He explained by going SMP they were able to become commissioned without having to wait for a leadership course slot.

My DD has chose her school (ST. LEO's), will be part of the ROTC there, and is anxiously waiting for news on this board. My question is, should she be considering SMP so she can attend BASIC this summer before college so she is not in her Junior Year wondering if there is funds for her?

Is anyone familiar with SMP?

Thank you!!

I just wanted to say "hello" to everybody on this board. I finally registered last night as I wanted to send "thanks" to each and every one of you.

I check this board three/four times a day for any smidgen of news, and it's comforting to know our family isn't the only family sweating the long-awaited results. Our son missed the cutoff for the fall board, so the January board was their first look-see at his file. He carries a 3.53 GPA unweighted, works 25 hours every week, participates in community activities through his school, lettered in wrestling. His SAT scores were R 620 M 640 W 620. ACT overall score of 27. Like you, Hopeful Parent, our son is as cool as a cucumber. Commissioning is Plan A, but we encouraged Plans B and C, and those are already in place. He's been accepted to The Citadel, VMI, and Norwich, but without a scholarship, those won't be possible.

But this board has helped a great deal with the (painful at times) waiting, and it has served as a great way to help keep perspective on the whole process. It's a great board!

Best of luck to everybody!!
