January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

We are rooting for you, Ohio, and everyone else who hasn't heard yet!!!!!

(unless DS/DD is able to transfer).

This chapter is FAR from being completed.

How unusual or difficult is it to get a transfer if they put you in a school you didn't get in or don't really want to go to? Plans on attending SMC

Keep the Faith

Ohio, My grandmother told me once that parenting is a work in progress...and by the time you figure it out the job is done. We all do exactly what we think is best.

I believe in the October board, the status page changed for 3 or 4 days. The good news is if you do not get an offer, the next board is very very soon, so you will not have to wait 2 months hopefully.

Okay, I am rambling, but I needed to get some of this out of my head...no one here to discuss this with; so I lean on the shoulder of my SAF friends :frown:

Rambling is encouraged. This day(or 2-3)is what I had in mind when starting the thread. Didn't plan on the other 500 posts or so inbetween, just knew when the results where coming in we would need each other 'cause in the real world our friends and families sometimes just don't get this....

love your grandmother's point NMS*17. Mine comes from somebody, can't remember who, "Parenting is the only job you work yourself out of if you do it right".

I am so happy for all those getting the status change message. I have already checked numerous times this morning, but have been trying to convince myself not to check again until 'later'. The waiting is so hard. All the things running through my head that I must not have done right to get him a good position on the list. His stats aren't as strong as others here, but he is a great kid and so focused on the Army. The Army decision has shaped him into a different kid over the last few months...he is maturing and every thought is related to "'when I am in the Army". We are very proud of the young man he is becoming. The scholarship offer doesn't change where he is headed, I guess for me I see it as a validation from CC and/or the Battalion that they recognize what a great catch he will be for them.

For what it's worth, you have summarized EXACTLY what has been going through my head since yesterday morning. I could have typed this myself about our situation. Very well said. :thumb:

I think I can say with 1,000,000,000% certainty that anyone who truly wants to serve as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, will be given that opportunity. :thumb:

The other thing about your "validation" statement is that CC does not get a chance to actually meet our DS/DDs and to see how great they really are!!!!!!!!! Eventually, though, the Army will learn this. It may take showing up in the fall as an ROTC walk on and having the cadre really get to know our DS/DDs, but eventually the Army will find out how great our kiddos are.

I received one piece of advice the day our DS graduated from HS.

I will pass it onto all of you.

You are NOW the frame that holds the picture. They are the picture. Nobody can ever tell you what the frame of the Mona Lisa looks like, but without that frame, there would be no Mona Lisa to view.

I also will agree with Ksmom.

The child you drop off at the SA or the college dorm will be a child. The person who comes home for Thanksgiving will be an amazing adult. You will do a double take, and ask in your mind...is this my kid, or has an alien taken over their body? All of the sudden they are no longer kids. They are adults and the military, be is scholarship or not had a big part in that equation.

FWIW, they still are kids, and will bring home every piece of laundry just to remind you that they are still your kid!

If it follows the pattern of this January board, we very much WILL have a wait of 2 months.

Early January Board = Results Posted End of February
... leads me to assume ...
Early March Board = Results Posted End of April

Not sure this particular issue has come up, but has anyone who did not get a scholarship from the first scholarship board last Fall, NOW see the magic message to check their Dodmerb status from this January board? In other words, I'm curious if someone who didn't get a scholarship offer from the 1st board is now seeing that they're getting a scholarship from the 2nd board?

That is the caes with my DD, she was passed over from the October Board, and her status changed this board.

I hope CC doesn't put anyone is that position. May 1 is magic day for most, if not all, colleges to confirm attendance. It could happen, but I would think they'd like to avoid doing this to the colleges too. But who knows, if the government shut does occur, they may cancel the March board-or would it be considered essential to government services?

Are you asking do they roll over candidates to the next board?

Clarkson and Marist would be the ones to ask that directly.

I know for AFROTC they do, but it is a case by case scenario. They have 3 piles...YES, NO and Roll over, which is maybe.

Maybe a Type 1, Maybe a Type 2, Maybe a Type 7, Maybe none.

During a shutdown, POTUS has discretion to keep AD military going as if nothing happened. As such, I still see the March board happening. DoD and DoA civilians are different situation, though.

The issue with a shutdown, though, is whether CC can make financial promises with no money in the bank account.

Wow Ksmom, you said EXACTLY what I'm feeling this morning. My DS stats are not as strong as many others here either, but we remain hopeful. As others have said, whether DS gets the scholarship or not, he still plans to go to his #1 school (Texas A&M) if accepted, join the Corps in Army ROTC, and persue a commission. The scholarship would just make it so much easier! The only good news we have had during this entire process is that the PMS recommended DS for a scholarship after his interview last summer. We don't know what his score was.

Sincere congratulations to all that are receiving good news! As for the rest of us - stay to course. It's not over until it's over!

Government shutdown

I work for DVA, and was part of the Government shutdown of 1995. It did not last long, and although no monies were paid for about a month, the money was eventually allocated, and paychecks recieved.

That would drag out the board, so either way, delayed beyond May 1 for results or cancelled board, is the same outcome for the remaining applicants that get rolled to March board: make your plans without the scholarship and hope to be pleasantly surprised if something materializes. Don't mean to sound like a downer, but I'm always a prepare for the worst/hope for the best kinda gal.

May 1 is magic day for most, if not all, colleges to confirm attendance.

April 1st is the date for my son's first choice school.

We plan on moving forward with our "Plan B" and registering early next week with school choice #1 (he is already accepted) so that he can be guarunteed his housing preference. That leaves us in the position of:

1) Planning to attend his first choice school and focusing on good grades and making a positive impression on the schools ROTC cadre with hopes of securing a 3 years scholarship. If any type of scholarship comes through for him from the March board to his first choice school that will work well for him.

2) The wild card is if he were to receive any type of scholarship to his 2nd or 3rd choice schools from the March board. If that happens we will be making a mad scramble to visit said school to see if we can get accepted ; my son's primary focus right now is ROTC, and he would be more than willing to go to his 2nd or 3rd choice schools on a scholarship. Not because he has to (financially), but because he wants to be an officer and has a desire to now start standing on his own two feet.

If we have to cancel our 1st choice school registration after April 1st, we forfeit $395.00 of our deposit / payments. Not the end of the world but still a position we would rather not be in.

Thank you for saying so...after reading my post I feel a little silly rambling on.

YES-YES-YES!!! Congrats to all that are receiving good news; and over the next few days, please keep us informed about your school offers and such.:thumb::thumb:

Now, excuse me while I get back to work and losing myself in my coffee and GS thin mints:shake:

Wow, sorry the deadline is even earlier for your DS. I know I'll be having a long talk with my DS tonight about where do we go from here. He's already contacted SMP/National Guard at his #1 school and will consider this a his plan B. Since they won't sign paper work until he graduates in June it will leave a lot open for him. But he has to pick a school now.

Have you tried contacting the school to see if they will grant an extension? It has been done in the past by a few posters. Your son may not get the exact housing he wishes so it's a gamble but something to inquire about.

The housing is the issue. His preffered housing choice is also the most economical so although they might extend the deadline, the housing would be unavailable and the next tier up is no better and substantially more expensive.

In the grand scheme of things, this isnt the worst problem we could have. I have a happy, healthy, relatively bright son, who has a strong desire to serve the Lord, his country, and to stand on his own two feet (My gosh, am I ever proud of him). I probably wont even remember the $395.00 at his commisioning ceremony.

Just making the point that the delays from CC do have real consequences on the prospective cadets.
