January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

The housing is the issue. His preffered housing choice is also the most economical so although they might extend the deadline, the housing would be unavailable and the next tier up is no better and substantially more expensive.

In the grand scheme of things, this isnt the worst problem we could have. I have a happy, healthy, relatively bright son, who has a strong desire to serve the Lord, his country, and to stand on his own two feet (My gosh, am I ever proud of him). I probably wont even remember the $395.00 at his commisioning ceremony.

Just making the point that the delays from CC do have real consequences on the prospective cadets.

And I should add - I'm well aware that the $395.00 would be more than made up for in the reduction of tuition costs the scholarship would provide, so in the end it's not much of an issue I suppose.

To reiterate : Just making the point that the delays from CC do have real consequences on the prospective cadets.

Does anyone know how long it will take to hear something from DoDMERB. As I've said before we've been through a long process with them that was part of the USMA application process. We've been told that USMA academy waived all the disqualifications - although we don't have anything in writing. Now I wonder how long it will take CC to review his DoDMERB file and decide on his status.
Does it just seem to be WAIT, WAIT and WAIT some more?
Hurry up and wait is an understatement. Half of ROTC is waiting. The other half is being told where to wait at and what to wait for.
OBTW that is the way of life for the military too. AND will be your ROTC career. It doesn't end with the scholarship, every yr there will be another board...field training, career, assignments, etc.

Still waiting...

I received one piece of advice the day our DS graduated from HS.

I will pass it onto all of you.

You are NOW the frame that holds the picture. They are the picture. Nobody can ever tell you what the frame of the Mona Lisa looks like, but without that frame, there would be no Mona Lisa to view.

I also will agree with Ksmom.

The child you drop off at the SA or the college dorm will be a child. The person who comes home for Thanksgiving will be an amazing adult. You will do a double take, and ask in your mind...is this my kid, or has an alien taken over their body? All of the sudden they are no longer kids. They are adults and the military, be is scholarship or not had a big part in that equation.

FWIW, they still are kids, and will bring home every piece of laundry just to remind you that they are still your kid!

Pima, your words are incredibly comforting. We're still hoping for that status change, but the hope is dwindling by the hour. However, we send congratulations to each and every one of you that has gotten the great news!!!! The excitement (and worry) are palpable through this thread. It's...in a word...comforting.

To Ohio and all others still waiting...no news COULD BE good news!!! My hopes and prayers are with each of you!!!!!!

caption,

The fact is scholarship or no scholarship, I am darn proud of a kid I never met. To say at 17/18 I will defend our country already shows the mettle they are made of.

Not everyone will get that chance to receive a scholarship, but it does not negate their qualities, and for all of us, at least IMPO, thank you and your child.

Thank you for supporting his dream re: the military. Thank them for stepping up to the plate.

Don't give up. The fat lady won't sing for about a decade or so. If he wants and it is his fate he will get it.

That's the thing sometimes we forget there is a silly thing called fate. We may want a path to walk on, but life somehow gets in the way.

ABSOLUTLEY TRUE!!! These are AMAZING kids who with or without ROTC scholarships are destined to do GREAT things!!!!!

I love this thread because everyone here genuinely cares and supports everyone be it in times of joy, sorrow or fear.

100K ?

Yes, the chapter is far from over, but lets get back to celebrating those with good news -
I know there will be more good news, we just have to hang tight.:thumb:

So what happens when this thread reaches 100K views? Doesn't look like there is space for 6 digits on the main page. We need to stick together through the last board.

TacticalNuke is probably freaking out right now!

SO true...for some of our children this has been a life long dream (literally) to serve their country. Most other parents don't understand what it takes to be these kids parents, to support their choice and to encourage it, not discourage it. This is very hard for us to do because the world is not a safe place to be at times. I could not be more proud of my DS and marvel at his maturity at 17. Most of his classmates are wondering which college to go to with the "cool name", no joke and ours are making life choices when it comes to ROTC and which branch to serve in for years and years to come.

Not to be corny but look at what is going on in the world and those young people who started the protest just want the opportunity to vote on a leader and to be free and our children make our country free. They want what we have. Congratulations to everyone no matter if they received the "status change" or not! Does a parent proud doesn't it? :thumb:

I have a couple observations I wanted to pass along to those still waiting.

I looked back at the thread for the frist board, it started Nov. 15th with the first status change. I looked through the thread and saw that the last person to post their status change came on Nov. 19th, 4 days after the first post. Don't give up on this board quite yet, if it follows suit there may be more changes to come.

I also counted the number of status change post from the first board, there were 25. So far there have been only 16 posts of a status change on this thread. This falls in line with what Clarkson was saying about fewer offers this board. I can only imagine that there will be a much higher number of offers for the final board when you consider Patentesq's research on the budget issues.

Remember there were only 460 offers given on the first board, if the numbers on the SAF are reflection of the total numbers then this board has made fewer offers leaving the bulk to the final board.

Hang in there everyone, there may be more good news in the next couple days. The kids represented on this board are terrific, I'm sure good things will come to them, if not now then by the next board. Good luck everyone.

Schools

We just got a call from #3 choice school. Interesting it was the first state school on the list, wondering if the private schools are out for number 1 and 2 choice.

I just talked to an roo at a school and he said that they haven't received news of any scholarships for them yet. So there is still hope!
