January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

not sure

Wait, are people beginning to hear if they have got the scholarship???

Her number 3 choice ROO called her high school and left a message to talk to her. He has never called her before. We returned the call and left a message.

I just found it interesting that it is the only state school in the top 3.

Paradoxer,

Clarkson or Marist would be able to answer that, but my guess would be yes every college probably has a cadet on ROTC scholarship...notice the word GUESS!

So......

Let's say you find out that there were no awards to "First Choice School" during the first two boards. Would this play into the awards for the third board or does OML always rule over school choice?

Generally, people don't discuss who is on scholarship on campus, but there are times that only contracted cadets are included for certain things. From that experience, goaliegirl tells me there is only one other scholarship recipient on her campus (and goaliegirl's is a campus scholarship). Granted, her campus is a fairly new campus in a larger unit that probably has several more scholarships.

A lot of her campus is SMP.

AFROTC Mom, but I agree with goalie, they don't talk about scholarships at all.

Scholarship or no scholarship will not impact your ranking.

Paradoxer,

again I will defer to Marist and clarkson on the OML question.

I will say for AFROTC OML is a big factor. You will find out when they go for career assignments they will use OML in determining the path.

I might as well throw this into the mix.

When I went to Norwich, I was one of the freshmen who showed up without a scholarship. Nobody cared about scholarships at all (it was more of a "parent" thing). I did, however, get picked up on a 3yr campus scholarship that fall. I then proceeded through the remaining years with somewhat of a "2.0 and go" attitude, because all I wanted was Infantry. In retrospect, it would have been MUCH better over the long run if I had much higher grades in college. But I can't go back to that now.

Fast forward to law school. During graduate school, Ronald Reagan was no longer paying the bill. And I knew that if I didn't get straight A's, I'd end up selling cars or something with $100k in student loans. I remember, distinctly, one day I was tired and didn't feel like going to my contracts class. I ran some numbers through my head and concluded that I was essentially paying $350 for that one-hour class. I grabbed my books and headed off to class.

Grades in college matter MUCH more than grades in high school. There have been times throughout this process when I have actually thought that maybe it would be better for my kid (who will need really good grades if he wants med school) not to be on scholarship rather than to be on scholarship. The other thing that I have thought about is, if DS didn't get selected for a scholarship, then he would really have to bust his tail as a walk-on ROTC cadet in the hopes of getting a campus scholarship. Now, if we see the military really restricting active duty slots in 4 years, when the Class of 2015 is ready to graduate, my DS busting his tail in his first year as a walk-on ROTC would be HUGE for his prospects of getting an AD slot, whereas a person with a 4yr scholarship might become complacent because there might be less incentive to compete early on with the other ROTC cadets.

Those who are hungrier often do better in the long run. The Green Bay Packers proved that point a few weeks ago.

Just a thought.

2 years ago we had 5 4yr designees coming out of high school. Last year we had none until May, and that student had already committed to another school.

This year we have had 1 so far.

Thanks for your input

So I think what you are telling me is that they won't travel farther down the OML next month just to fill quotas at specific schools.

One thing that every cadet needs to accept, scholarship or no scholarship you will still need to fight for that career assignment.

Being a scholarship recipient won't guarantee you your desired career field.

Again, an AFROTC Mom, but for AFROTC career board (AFSC) you don't get points for being a scholarship recipient. For OML gpa matters.

Once there at college, you will be required to start the dance again. Difference is this time it isn't about colleges, it is about your real life adult career path.

Message hasn't changed yet. How do we know if we roll over to the next board. Are all the updates done now?

Justed wanted to weigh in on this thread! From what I heard today, scholarship recepients are only being given a choice of one school this year. Unlike in years past, when they were given 3 or 4 school choices from their wish list. Good luck to all who are still waiting!

Congratulations to everyone with a status change! I hope that you all get the choices that you have been hoping for

Keep the faith to those who haven't seen the change yet.

This is something that may be just happening with the Jan. board and possibly the next (last) board. My son received the scholarship to 5 schools on the Oct. board. The current budget problems and other changes we never hear about may be the reason only one school is being offered. We will have to wait and see when people start posting the schools that are offered this board.

Just found the "We're sorry" msg on NROTC. At least we know where we stand there. Everyone is finding out the same day it seems. There are options regardless and that is what we have to remember:smile:
