January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

I just read it on this forum that ERAU was full....Hopefully someone doesn't have the real 411 on it and they are wrong.

My DS has left a few messages this past week and hasn't gotten a call back. We called the AROTC phone number listed on their website but got routed to Princton Univ. AROTC. All we wanted to know is if someone could see any information on his application. DS being the 17 year old he is forgot which schools he put on his applicaiton. He applied to 3 of them but not the other 2 and our computer crashed that had the information and we can get to it....So in other words we have no idea what is up with ERAU or AROTC... Hopefully ERAU still have spots open, we went there last spring and DS loved the small campus and the classes, the palm trees were pretty good also.

Offer Letter Last Board

DS's status changed 11-15-2010, letter dated 11-19-2010, received letter 11-22-2010. Had until 12-19-2010 to accept or reject. College was my DS's third choice, a large out of state university with a large ROTC Battalion. It is an excellent school with a great Engineering Dept.. The school has given him a scholastic scholarship that would cover room and board. His first two choices were SMC's with out of state tuition and were very competitive for the ROTC scholarships. He has been accepted to all of them. He is very happy with his options. Congratulations to everyone awarded in this round. To those that are still waiting, keep the faith there are more scholarships to come. God Bless and Good Luck.:thumb:

Dodmerb website

Is anyone else having trouble getting on the Dodmerb website from the rotc status website?

stillhopeful, I can't confirm it more than anyone else can besides clarksonarmy but it looks like the March board is over.

January board is over...you've gotta start the March board thread once Clarkson confirms January is officially over. I don't think he has, yet, althought MaristCollege did say he thought it was over.

DODMERB site is still down, and as far as I know there is no plan for it to come back up. I can't get a straight answer, and I don't know what the plan is going forward...I asked.

Have not received the message to tell us that the letters went out yet, so we haven't been told we can start calling winners. Hopefully Monday we will get the go ahead.

Shout outs

"Have not received the message to tell us that the letters went out yet, so we haven't been told we can start calling winners. Hopefully Monday we will get the go ahead."

Thank you for sharing this, Clarkson! My son was worried after reading that others were getting calls from their schools and he hadn't. You make me wish we knew about Clarkson BEFORE the board!

To Patentesq,

Thanks for your congrats. Right back at you!

Although I advise to interview at school of interest, it's obviously not the only solution. I'm fine with an applicant interviewing at another school, but keeping in contact with me. What really concerns me is when I see an applicant who finally gets an offer, and thens starts to research what school is the best fit (it actually happens). It is going to become painfully obvious here soon that if you haven't thought long and hard, and refined your list of schools you are going to be sitting there with an offer to a school you have no intention to attend begging Cadet Command to give you another chance, and trying to contact ROOs for the first time to get some help. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I see it often, and I do everything I can to forewarn applicants.

Recommendation to admissions makes more sense. That is an indication of the relationship between the Mil Sci department and the school. For me, it's a matter of going into the admissions system (same one admissions uses), checking the status, and then swinging by admissions to schmooze, talk a little hockey, make sure everybody has their Army ROTC coffee cup on their desk, and make sure they are tracking that incoming scholarship applicant hasn't been accepted yet. Works like a charm here at Clarkson, not so sure the cadets bound for Columbia get the same consideration.

Don't we have something better to do on a Saturday morning than pontificate about Army ROTC scholarships??

Similar story for us. If you could not be bothered to attend New Cadet Orientation, you will not be considered for scholarships.

hmmm...we sit here in the Midwest, but DS attends a really good private school with a fabulous college counselor. She helped him find Norwich University. It's a big name on this forum, but relatively unknown to us. He has a really helpful Naval ROTC officer and interviewed with the Naval Reserve Commander. (He's a Sea Cadet) He also interviewed with local college PMS's. Late in the game he found WPI (Worcester Poly Tech), but didn't interview with it's PMS either. DS was accepted to both. Is he at a disadvantage that he didn't interview with the PMS's at those schools?

Marist, the issue is not related to the campus scholarships that become available when one walks on to AROTC. I was talking about the mandatory interview for the national 4yr. AROTC scholarship, which is handled centrally in Ft. Knox. Question was whether it helps for a candidate to show up at the School #1 school or whether that can be done by visiting the nearest ROTC unit. In the case of my DS, it didn't appear to matter (still holding my breath, though).

Of course, if one doesn't get the 4yr, and shows up at a school and doesn't participate in the battalion, it makes sense that s/he won't be high on the list for 3yr/2yr scholarships.

Is he at a disadvantage that he didn't interview with the PMS's at those schools?

Short answer is likely no. My DS did not interview with any of the PMSs from any of his AROTC scholarship schools. He had a local ROTC PMS take care of it. DS's status changed yesterday (still waiting for confirmation from CC), so it didn't appear to matter at all where he did the interview. All of the ROTC cadre are on the same team.

It used to be that scholarships were handled locally by the schools. In that case, it would have DEFINITELY mattered. However, CC has since gone to a centralized process, so the lesson for future folks is that it is less important now where you interview.

The only issue is that a cadre member may award more points to an applicant if s/he knows that the applicant is interested in the cadre member's school. Bottom line is the safest thing is to show up at the #1 so you don't have to worry about it.

In your case, I wouldn't really about it. It definitely didn't matter for my DS and it very likely didn't matter for your's.

MESSAGE TO ALL POSTERS: Is there anyone else here on SAF who did the 4yr interview at a school that was not on the school choice list, but nevertheless had a status change this week?? Or is my DS all alone in this aspect?

DS had a AROTC status change, but we are waiting on NROTC. BTW, DS did not interview with PMS of any colleges on the list. Two were not feasible, and tried to get all interviews done while going to 2 a day football practice. One had to get done after school started.

DS didn't get a status change but the PMS that interviewed him assured him and myself over the phone that it would not matter. If it would have I would have burned the vacation time and made the overnight trip to #1 school. Also checked at his #1 school OOS and the answer was the same. I have to take them at their word because it was explained by both parties that it is a very common thing because of the cost of traveling out of state.

interview at different school

Our DS did his interview locally at a school that was not one of his choices and his status also changed this week.

follow up

I will say this, even though we did not interview with the schools our DS applied for we have been in touch with them by phone and since his status changed are planning visits asap to his 1 and 2 choices to meet everyone and get a feel for the programs there.

If no change by now... should I presume it's a "no go" for this second board?
:frown:

jkcksoup, I think you me and a few other regulars are hanging over for the March board. I think its pretty well done for January (though I saw Clarkson stated he hasn't heard that the letters have officially gone out). See you on the other thread - may it be a brief and uneventful one - I'm hearing that DC is talking less shut down and more compromise, a good thing for getting the boards thru with less drama I hope.

Take care.
