January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Way to put me in my place, decisions are hard, you just try to weigh everything, any obstacle you might see coming.

Not trying to put you in your place at all. Of course decisions are hard. I have lived hard decisions with my kids - I get it.

I just do not want someone making a decision that they or their child would later regret based on speculative information.

The Army is a huge organization - over 500,000 strong. There is no way they ever could have offered enough scholarships to fill their needs of junior officers. It just does not make sense that they would only allow scholarship cadets to contract. (in contrast - the Navy and AF are much smaller with more technical needs)

The ability to afford or not afford a college is a decision made by each family. When finances are crucial (trust me - I have btdt) sometimes you have to just wait until the end when all offers - acceptance and financial are on the table.

The "speculation" I was referring to was throughout this thread - not directed at any one poster.

Good Luck to you and your daughter as you both venture into a new phase these next four years!

It is hard, it is kind of like buying a new home. For some they have their heart set on one home ins one development. For others they get information overload and all of the options. This is a big investment.

I think that if you start doing pro's and con's you might get overloaded.

Just a mom with 2 in college...if you can afford to revisit their top choices, do so now.

They have grown over the last 6-9 months since they started this process. Walking on campus is no longer a maybe, but now WHAT IF? They will actually see it through different eyes. They will try to envision attending there, going to school games, hanging out at the student union. They will see it differently.

Go to the BNs, make an apptmt with them. Let them talk to cadets and the command. Tell them you will meet them in an hour at X spot on campus. Kids get a better feel without the folks hovering over the shoulder...asking so what do you think? This will also allow them to walk the campus like their peers. They will get to live for a few minutes what it will be like next fall.

Their face when they meet up with you will say it all. We did that with DS, when he met up with Bullet the 1st thing out of his mouth, was Dad can we go to the Bursar's office and pay my deposit? Nothing else except "yes" had to be said.

Again, you are in the thick of things and it is constantly changing, you have yet to see how much they have grown this yr. Trust me, take a step back, and that kid who entered as a SR in hs, is not the kid you say goodnight to every night. You are just too close to see that.

These are just the numbers for the January boards or the totals for the year?

Those are the numbers for the JAN Board. There were almost 400 accepted offers from the previous board. I am unsure how many offers were made. Some offerees turn down the scholarship because they already received a full ride to their first choice school through athletics or academics.

appreciated

Probably should have said "reality checking" me. It was just what I needed to stop overthinking the whole deal. Money is definately an object to overcome. I do not want to advice her in the wrong way.

Question

You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite

This is what is showing up on the scholarships site as of Thursday for my son. I am getting conflicting information. Does anyone know what this means?

Congratulations

Looks like an offer is on the way.

Are offers still being posted or is everything complete for this board? if so it looks like I am here for the wait for the march board also.

We apologize, we are experiencing some technical problems. Please call 1-800-750-7682, press option 5, then press option 2 and you will be connected to a processor who can assist you.

Is this hopeful? I have gotten this a couple time on the status check website..

I don't think it means anything

There seem to be many variations on the question "How do I know if I received an offer from the latest board ?"

The simple answer is: Call the ROTC program that you are hoping to join. Talk to the ROO. If you received an offer, they will know.

The numbers have not changed since 0800. My guess is that all updates are complete.

Just got the call from Option1 school ROO. He explained she could, once letter received, request the tranfer through her point of contact. So now we wait again.

She did only recieve one offer, I know alot of people are speculating about choices. No choice offered, one school, 4 year.

Can you send me a pm explaining the process for transfer? I'm in the same boat as you.

I don't really have a good answer to any of these questions. I would just be SWAGing.

I checked the numbers this morning. It looks like there were more updates over the weekend. Over 800 high school students from class of 2011 are listed as "Offered Pending Acceptance" for a total of over $18,000,000 in scholarship dollars.

Regarding the updates that were made over the weekend, will those have already been posted as a status change on the status page as of this morning or do you anticipate that the status page will change throughout the day with the new updates.

cant find the link with the acronyms...haven't had my second cup of coffee...really long day yesterday....what is SWAGing please?

I checked a random sample. It appears that all those offered scholarships from the latest board will say: "You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite".

I am not sure when it will update to show which schools the offers are for.

The website that the students and parents are using is different then the one where I can view the results.

Thank you for the clarification.

It looks like the offers for this board have come to a close. If your accounting is correct regarding the 800 + or - figure then the max. offers to date would be around 1200. If CC plans to keep the scholarship offer close to the number last year then it looks like the final board may result in a few more offers then this board, of course you all know what it means to assume anything.

This must be a trying time for the ROO's as well.

Congratulations to those who have been given offers and good luck to all those waiting for the final board. Hopefully the wait will not be as long this time. It was hard enough waiting for the reults of the first board, I can only imagine the anxioty you have all felt over the last 2 months. Hang in there everyone, we're all rooting for you.

My interpretation of that post as a spouse of a military member, would be...due to classification regulations they cannot confirm or deny, but they can imply due to their knowledge why they may view something differently than a non-AD member.

In other words, Marist can not say YES or NO. Nor will he put his career on line to use the system. Whatthey are stating is that to the best of their knowledge this is the answer.

I know you all want an answer, Marist and clarkson are not playing games, any info they give out could damage their career. They are here to support, but must always think about the military's requirements first.

Now as a poster that was married to a military member...this is how I read it:

RESULTS ARE OUT. Read into that what you want.

Looks like I've received a scholarship! My stats are:

3.2 GPA
27 ACT
6 Varsity letters
Varsity rowing captain
Music Honor Society- treasurer
Symphonic, marching, and jazz bands- 4 years
Asst. manager at local pool over summer- 2 years
several honors and AP courses
70+ hours community service (incl. EMT)
180-200 on interview (out of 200)
PT Scores- mile 5:27, pushups 35, sit ups 72

Good luck to everyone on the March board!

Consult Definition Nos. 2 and 3 of the Urban Dictionary: [REMOVED]

EDIT: I apologize, but when I clicked on the link again, it rendered a different list of definitions. No one was being vulgar, so I removed the link. I've always understood SWAG to mean "Sophisticated Wild [Arse] Guess"

If our son was told by his first choice school to expect a letter, am I correct in assuming that letter are only sent to scholarship recipients this round, since there is one more round to go?

Scientific Wild Ass Guess...SWAG.
