Boy if that isn't a tempting thought, it crossed our minds a couple times when our first son went through this.

Your son has probably already gone through Dodmerb like so many have.

Now is the time you feel like covering them in bubble wrap to keep them from getting hurt before school starts. That doesn't end once they start, our older son injured his ankle last spring and we all held our breath, luckily it wasn't as bad as first thought and he was able to continue, went to Airborne during the summer. 2 kids from my son's class have been disenrolled for medical issues that came up during their time at school. Seems like the worring never stops, MIP's, Traffic Tickets, Grades, PT, and injuries, we have decided to put that cruise off until graduation, sure sounds tempting right now with all the cold weather.

Agreed! And yes, he completed his Dodmerb in early December. We will definitely wait on the cruise/vaca, but are hanging on to the thought of it.
After 2 children going through Catholic prep schools, and the older a Jr. in College with no scholarships, we sure are looking forward to a break in the $$ flying out the door, though!

Trust me, we have thought of some various fun ways to spend the saved up tuition $$. One of the funniest things I have seen was when we were at a marina and saw a boat with the name "Son's Tuition"

Well, my DD called the scholarship officer at her #1 school and they did not have any info. Her status changed last week. I do not find an ROO listed at the school. Is the ROO in a central place for the state or region?

The ROO is the Recruiting Operations Officer, each AROTC Batallion will have one. They may be just listed as the Recruiting Operations Officer, they should be listed on the batallion's website for each school. I would have your daughter call each school on her list and check with them, the school that is listed on the offer should be able to tell you if it is their batallion your daughter has received the offer for.

I called another school and she was nice enough to look it up for me. My DD has been awarded a 3 yr. to her #1 school!!!! That will make her (and us) very happy :thumb:

Just out of curiosity, how do the 3 year scholarships work? Pay the first three not the fourth? the last three?

With a 3 year AD scholarship you pay for the first year and the scholarship starts the beginning of the sophomore year. Once the scholarship starts it has the exact same benefits as the 4 year only that it starts the sophomore year.

Now the Fine Print:

There are things you need to be aware of:
You must maintain a 3.0 in all ROTC classes.
Pass the AFPT.
Maintain the Min. overall GPA 2.0 I beleive.
Don't get hurt.
Stay medically qualified.
Don't get a speeding ticket over a $249.00 fine.
No MIP's or other infractions.
Attend all MS classes, laps, PT, FTX, and ect.
No arrests or criminal citations.
And finally you will need the reccomendation of the PMS to start the 3 year AD scholarship.
There may be a few other things.

Really not hard to do for the excellent applicants represented on this board, just some things to consider.

First of all, I GOT MY 4-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP TODAY TO MY 1ST CHOICE:thumb:
Second, I got $20k a year from the school.
Total cost there is $53,000 a year, with tuition $37,000.
The question: what's the best way for me to move around these funds so I can pay the least? I've read AROTC scholarship can be put towards room and board if you want it too? Any advice on how to work this out is appreciated.

If I have my math right the tuition is $37,000 and the room and board is $16,000.00.

Make sure you check that the $20,000 from the school is dependant on maintaining a certain GPA and what that GPA is. Don't under estimate the time that ROTC will take up during school, and don't over estimate what GPA you think you can keep.

If you use the ROTC scholarship for room and board and the $20,000 for tuition you will end up with a bill for $17,000.

Make sure that the schools $$ can be used for room and board, if it can the best way would be to use the ROTC for tuition and the $20,000 to cover R&B.

Remember too that if you use the ROTC for R&B you may be required to pay taxes on that money since the IRS does not allow for R&B payments to be tax free.

If you choose to use the ROTC for R&B you will need to pre pay the R&B and wait for the money from ROTC, they are not speedy in this regard, it is often payed back at the end of the semester.

A lot of the questions are now starting to be about specific parts of the scholarship process. It would be best to start a new thread for some of these questions. Posts will get lost on this thread since the Jan. board seems to be completed. You will get much more information if you start a new thread specific to your question.
