Hi, my son got a nomination for the USMMA. I'm curious to know what will happen next because his ACT score wasn't good like they want it to be. But he excels in everything else, GPA, Athletics, passed CFA & DODMERB, etc.

Will he get a sponsorship from USMMA to the NMMI? He applied to NMMI last night on-line.

Also, on the USMMA website to check on his application, it still doesn't say that he got a nomination. Does it take a while for USMMA to change that?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

With a nomination to USMMA, they now have the legal authority to offer him an appointment, congratulations to him!

However, that does not mean they will.

They (the KP Admissions Board) will conduct a thorough review of his qualifications and if they feel that he will contribute to the class through his demonstrated leadership, academic success, or athletic prowess, they will offer an appointment.

Good luck, now the waiting game begins.

If he has not been in contact with a KP Admissions Field Representative, I urge him to contact one as soon as possible, as they are fantastic in helping candidates negotiate the maze that sometimes confronts a candidate and/or their parents.

Luigi - Thanks for your reply. I know his ACT score is not what they want, do they ever make exceptions? If not, would it be typical for them to offer him a prep school sponsorship?

    Thank you.

I'm not sure about USMMA-sponsored prep students at NMMI, but according to their own web site (http://www.nmmi.edu/prep/usmma.htm) USMMA "self-prep" students at NMMI must meet established SAT/ACT minimum scores for admission to the Academy.

    Admissions Field Rep can help.
Or, call admissions directly and they can help you understand the options and admissions landscape you are facing. Even better if your nominee does it, I'd suspect.

** They are VERY helpful. (and very nice about it as well.**
    Congrats on nomination !
(apologies for hopping into the answer pile.)

Luigi and Zonker, Thanks for your replies. My son has a good enough ACT for the NMMI, but I don't think he'd be classified as a self-prep from what I've read. Does anyone know for sure? What I've read states that he'd be a USMMA sponsored prep student, is that right?

I guess I can always call the Congressman, which I know would be very helpful. Thanks again.

The Congressman won't be able to give you information as accurate and complete as the Admissions Office can. Have your son call them! They really are about the best and friendliest Admissions staff I encountered through two kids' worth of college searches and applications.

How badly does your son want to go to KP? Badly enough to do some serious prep work and retake the ACT? Or to try the SAT since some kids do better on one test than on the other. DD did better on the ACT than the SAT. Your son may be the opposite. They are two different types of tests. There is still time to improve that test score before the final deadline.

Thanks KPMum. Maybe the SAT is a better test for him to retake. I'll have to look into that.

I would like to find out if anyone knows, if USMMA normally sponsors kids to the prep school who are nominated? I think the prep school would give him a good base.

I can't answer the original question regarding the ACT requirement because I simply don't know, but I would 100% agree with the other posters that he consider taking the SAT.

First call should be to USMMA Admissions though. They'll be of great help to you in this case.
