This past Friday the C1C’s had their “job drop”! This is what positions they will do in the Air Force after graduation in May!! Such a proud and exciting time for our family!!!
It’s hard to believe our time at the Academy is coming to an end. My son will be a Maintenance Officer after doing a year with the admissions office!! For those of you just entering! It will be here before you know it. For parents, hold on it’s a crazy exciting ride!

Do cadets have a higher chance of getting the position they want if the graduate towards the top of their class? Can someone explain how the Air Force decides which cadets get their top choice?

Yes and no. That is usually the process. But I heard some who graduated in the top 100 did not receive their choices.

It's a rather involved mathematical optimization algorithm which assigns a collection of cadets to a collection of jobs in a way that balances several objectives. One objective is to maximize the preferences of the cadets, but other objectives are oriented to Air Force needs (jobs that need to be filled, distribution of skill, etc). Last I heard, Academy and ROTC cadets are combined and assigned jobs simultaneously.

If you are interested in the math, you can google "assignment problem" for some related examples.

I'm curious...besides Pilot and Nav (or whatever you call the non-pilot aviators), what are the popular Assignments ?
