Does the Coast Guard participate in any Joint Operations? In what fields would a Coast Guard Officer work with the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines?

Also, what are some of the over seas bases in the Coast Guard? Do they ever go over to Japan or Europe?

In general, how often does the Coast Guard interact with other countries militaries?

Sam, I like the questions, but there is a LOT of this information available, open source all over the web. The Coast Guard regularly works with the Navy, less often with the other services. Coast Guardsmen are in the NAG, Iraq and Afghanistan, were the first servicemembers to deliver aid to the Republic of Georgia after Russia's invasion. You can find them in Japan, Europe, in nearly every geographic COCOM.

The Coast Guard larger than many navies around the world, and many nations are more comfortable working with the Coast Guard than the U.S. Navy (as their missions fall more in line with the USCG than USN).

There are "Coast Guard Activities" overseas, but full bases, not really.

I've done "joint" programs, in the end, I appreciate my service more than ever. I would assume most members think that.

I just came across a web site that has a picture and brief story of the Cutter MIDGETT based out of Seattle conducting a joint military operation with the Indian Coast Guard Ship SAMAR. The two ships were conducting tactical maneuvering during MALABAR Exercises off the west coast of India.

Here is the web site if you are interested.

My 4/c will be doing 11-weeks summer duty on MIDGETT this year.

That's good news for your son...the Midgett is a great boat...my son is on it as a J/O.

They also did joint ops this year with the Canadian Coast Guard during the Olympics and with several countries during Operation Pacific Unity.

And just so everyone knows, the Canadian Coast Guard is not considered a branch of their military, and carries different powers from the U.S. Coast Guard.
