Hello I am a current 1st year at my local community college in California. I was looking at options such as Junior Military Colleges and under their requirements they all ask for 3.0 or above. High school was a struggle and I am trying to have a fresh start at my local CC. Does college transcripts cover these requirements. Also if not what are some other Service Academy prep programs available for college candidates applying for the first time to help get a boost in admission?

If you want to attend a Junior Military College, I can recommend Marion Military Institute. My daughter and son-in-law both attended there. Great school. The webpage says 2.0 is the minimum to apply to the school in general. Why don’t you start with the first semester in the general MMI program and then move into the Service Academy Prep program after a semester or two? I’m sure the school will be able to work with you if you are performing well. Or just call MMI when they come back from Christmas break and discuss the issue with the SAP admissions team. Since you would be a self-prep student, they can discuss a realistic path forward.

Do Junior Military Colleges generally accept College Students who are enrolled in school? Especially in the Service Academy Prep program?

TBH, I'm not sure that any of the JMC are in the business of declining many students. To use Marion as an example, I think your odds of being accepted would be very good. Now, what LTC Bowen (director of the Service Academy Program at Marion) would likely do is take a look at your SAT/ACT and your grades from college and HS, including the courses you've taken, and then suggest a course of action for you at Marion. For some kids, SAP is meant as a one-year program. For others, he'll tell you up front that it will likely take more than a year. But that all depends on where you are as an entering student at Marion.

Since you are in California, which has dumped the SAT/ACT from public college admissions, and you don't otherwise mention it, I'll tell you that if you haven't yet taken the SAT/ACT, you need to do that. I know at Marion that is a very important gauge to help determine your starting point for the SAP curriculum.

Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania has a Junior College program and they also have an agreement with USMA to give favorable treatment to applicants but it is still competitive and requires a high GPA and SAT. If high school was a struggle the service academies may not be for you so look into other options like the Early Commissioning Program that allows becoming a National Guard Officer after completing 2 years at Georgia Military College, Marion, Valley Forge and New Mexico Military Institute.
