I was medically disqualified about a week ago and I am starting to stress about whether this disqualification will cause CGA to deny me. I know they offer conditional appointments but it's stressing me out because when I spoke with a coach from CGA she said I would be a very on-the-fence candidate. That is not something you want to hear, but I am also scared that CGA may not be going for a medical waiver. How do I find out if they will request a waiver for me? As well my stats are 3.9 GPA (weighted) 1250 in SAT 620 in math, 4-year varsity athlete, leadership in 5 separate activities, and president of two. I would like to consider myself a strong candidate if I were accepted I would like to pursue a career in the Coast Guard. Please let me know if you have any advice thank you!!

I just replied to your post in the USNA thread.

As I recommended in that thread, I would call the admissions office at USCGA and speak to your admissions officer.

Unfortunately, this is part of the process. Not everything can be waived. Some things can. You are in the same boat as many applicants. This thread may provide you some companionship as you wait.

As always, have alternate plans in place in case a waiver is not sought.

I do have alternative plans, The bad part is my alternative plan is Navy rotc so medical disqualification is still very not ideal. My life goal since I was 10 has been to be an officer in the coast guard or the navy

Super sorry. But dont give up hope yet. You arent out until you are. Also some things are waiverable for one branch, and not the other.

I would suggest having back up plans that are non-military, as well.

Oldest son was medically disqualified from all 3 academies. He walked on to ROTC, showed what he had to offer, and after a year they granted a waiver. Different waiver authorities is what he said. He's now Army Special Forces. Don't give up and show em' what you have!

Each Academy handles things differently, but my understanding is that USCGA will not even start considering you for a waiver unless they believe they want to offer you an appointment. Every year about 30% of those offered (conditional) appointments need waivers, so receiving a DQ is not necessarily the end of the road. It depends on whether the DQ is waiverable by CGA at all and whether they plan to offer you a conditional appointment.

As others have mentioned, don't worry about the waiver, yet.

With the stats you gave that coach is probably right about your chances. If you get in, celebrate. If not, consider a year of self-prep if you don't get offered CGAS. You can always try again next year, and the CGA does historically like reapplicants.

No idea if this is across the board or just my scenario, but I know I didn't start receiving any correspondence regarding a waiver for my DQ until after I received a conditional appointment.

In addition to Admission, have you reached out to the coach regarding the DQ? If they want you to play, they may be able to assist in the process, even minimally.
