In the Appointee Handbook it suggests that we take the German or Spanish placement exam online before BCT if we're most familiar with either of those foreign languages. If I take the Spanish test, does that mean I'll most likely be put in a Spanish class? Because I'd really rather learn a different language.

all depends. i took the german test and got placed in a 4th semester german class, exactly what i wanted. i say if you want another language, dont take the test. depending on how you do on your DLAB, though

Just curious, how do you go about taking these tests online?

    The Defense Language Aptitude Battery.

It's a really REALLY funky test to see if you have a decent aptitude for linguistic studies. The higher you score, the "more difficult/complex" a language the military might consider training you in.

I'd love to say I'm a gifted, natural pilot, etc...etc...but the only thing I've really scored "silly high" on was the DLAB...traveled a lot as a kid (AF Brat) and languages just come easily. Guess that's my "gift."

The flying thing...I've had to bust my butt at that!!!

    But it worked! :thumb:

What are the language requirements at the academy?

I've taken German all through high school and I am now taking AP German with the hopes of not having to take german EVER again as soon as that is possible (I'm going to have a technical major... probably some sort of engineering) and I was wondering what kinds of course and time requirements correspond with a given score on the AP test or on the test the AFA FL department issued test.

All cadets must take a language. I'm at school right now, so I'm not sure what the booklet actually said, but I think it's somewhere along those lines.

If so it would be nice to find out how much is required, and if any or all of it can be exempted due to prior instruction.

I don't think you can be exempted from language classes...they'll most likely just put you in a more advanced class or a harder language. Just my guess, though.

You MUST take 2 semesters of language as a techie major. How you go about that is up to you and the AF.

And for the non-technical majors, such as political science or the like?

It is 4 semesters for non-technical majors. Enter into a 200 level or above course and then its cake to get that minor!

Is it possible to get a tech major, AND get a minor in a foreign language?

yes it is possible but real tough. Example, i've recently declared a major in aero hopin to minor in french but that would mean taking extra courses as well as summer school so i won't be doing that.

Validating makes the difference. I am a techie major (Biochemistry) and I completed my Japanese minor last spring. 4 extra classes are easy to find if you've validated a couple. In fact, since you have to take 2 regardless, if you start in the 200 level, that only adds two extra courses overall. You could complete one of them during immersion over the summer too.

yep. i validated into german 222, or spring semester of german 2.

i can take one class next semester and another next spring semester and have my german minor at the end of 3dig year. or, i can take 1 class and go on an immersion trip and get the minor. it DEFINITELY helps to validate. and i'll probably be civil engineering (maybe systems)
