My understanding was the prep BFE's should have gone out by now? Has anybody heard anything? Would the counselor know anything?

I think Blackbird DS got his BFE on last Friday.
Our counselor said to my DS that he did not get FF, it was long time ago though.
But I am not sure how the counselor know that.
my DS got discouraged everytime he talk to his counselor, but I always encourage him.

Attybella, my son attended NWP last fall. Parent to parent I urge you to contact Mrs. Durbeck directly, as you may receive an answer here that isn't up-to-the-minute, or not reflective of recent changes to rules or curriculum. I assume you have her contact info, but if not, let me know. She also just sent out an email with links to a newsletter that addresses many of your questions. I suggest you go thru it line by line as there is so much there it's easy to miss things (trust me, we did). Did your DS receive the email? He should have. You can also have Mrs D add your email to the list. That we I was able to keep in the loop. :) My point is, attybella, go to the source. I never found Mrs. Durbeck to be anything less than extremely helpful. She is really the one to best answer your questions DEFINITIVELY.

Weekends are strict. However, I knew of prepsters who had to leave to do assessment testing at their home junior colleges, or a doctor appt, but that was rare. Again ask Mrs D for your individual situation.

As for a train, NWP is very isolated and warranted nothing less than a long and winding (but beautiful!) trip up the mountaintop for each visit. Many times the prepsters grabbed rides with other families who had room going up or down the mountain. We both gave and accepted such carpool rides. As mentioned in detail in the newsletter, transportation is otherwise very expensive.

When I have a little more time this weekend I will see what I can add to that list of supplies, as I'm sure the past prepsters will chime in will as well. MY DD is attending this fall, so I have all the latest info.

Thank you for this chance to ask some questions. Here goes:
1) My DS (his HS graduation is June 21st, we have a late calendar in So. California) is going to NWP this fall and I am just curious on how strict NWP is regarding weekends off. I saw their schedule for the weekends when the students are able to leave campus. But my stepson (DS' Stepbrother) is getting married on a weekend in Oct that is not on the off weekends. Is it okay to request a weekend off for the wedding?

2) The list of items to bring is very long. Do you have any tips on what else is ok to bring and what is not going to be useful?

3) I know there are some ATM machines available on campus, do you remember what banks they are and how far from campus?

4) I read somewhere that there is a train station close to campus. How can he access the trains to be able to come home to Orange County? Is there a shuttle/bus that he can take to go to the train station?

5) Any other tips on what he should do in the summer before he goes in? He's taking Calculus over the summer in a community college in our area.

I really appreciate your answers. Thank you!

attybella: I attended NWP this past year. If you want to send me a PM and ask any questions about things to bring or how the weekends work or anything please feel free to do so!

Dear Flydreamer,

Thank you for your quick response to my inquiry. I have read the newsletter and I will re-read it. I will also contact Mrs. Durbeck to ask my question about the wedding weekend and other concerns. She has been very helpful and easy to talk to, but she's been busy lately as you can imagine with the upcoming new set of preppies and the corresponding preparations for them.

I'm glad I can communicate with other parents who've gone through this experience before and who are willing to share their wisdom in having done so. I am excited for my DS, but also feeling a bit overwhelmed! He's my first one to go away to college, and I have three younger children ages 8, 6 and 3. I'm also feeling the blues because I will have to send him away soon.

Hope we can chat again soon. Take care and have a fun weekend!

Attybella--

Oh, my, you have little ones! I know what you're going thru. DS was my eldest, too, and I went thru many of the emotions you will likely experience. This I remember vividly: They were allowed to use their cell phones the first couple of days, then it was "radio silence"! It was so hard that first week wondering HOW he was doing and not being able to hear from him after 18 years. But the phones came back on weekends, and later in the fall there would be some communication during the week. :thumb:
It's fun to know your Ds will soon be friends with my DD.

As for communicating with the Durbecks, you're right; they're busy. I'm sure you can get most of the basic questions answered here, but my worry was for your specific wedding question. That will have to be worked out separately, of course.

Enjoy your Sunday!
