LOE or No LOE

Again, not accurate.

She states clearly in the first line that she has reviewed the application, and when (per instructions) we did reach out to Captain XXXX, he stated "you're good to go, this letter is a good thing, go get your nom, and send in your 7th semester grades when available.".

How can you say it means nothing more than what it says when there were SO MANY candidates who received LOE's in the first wave of BFE's sent out on Friday. Your completely ignoring FACTS. What about "this letter is sent only to outstanding candidates deserving of admission"...what does that mean, then???

C'mon, you're clearly running the wrong position here.

I don't know how many get them, I don't control that. 1 is all that matters to me - he got one, he got the nom, and he's getting the BFE (maybe even today if the mail ever comes).

Debating this is a waste of time. DS received an emphatic reaction from his FFR upon receiving one and it's clear what the letter says and what it allows in terms of an overnight visit. For any further proof all you need to do is refer to how many first wave appointments received them. That's all that matters in my mind...

I suspect all highly competitive applicants that don’t move their applications along receive the LOE.

What we do not know is the percentage of highly qualified candidates with LOEs that get appointments vs the percentage of highly qualified candidates without LOEs that get appointment. We also don’t know the percentage of the LOEs that get in vs the ones who don’t.
I really don't care either way, but in terms of 'move your file along' thought process, our DS was done with all components of his app including his FFR interview mid August, LOE came week 1 Sept. CFA pass and submission Oct. 1. Can't get much further in the app process than that without actually being done. Those that were submitting and or taking CFA the day before gave me heart palpitations.

I'm not "implying" anything. The mere statement by his Regional Admissions Officer when the LOE was received that "this is a good thing" made it 100% clear that DS was on the right track for an appointment.

Hey, lot's of "highly qualified" kids won't get appointments this year and every year, so I don't want to think about "likely".

Say what you want, but receiving the LOE for the first time was meaningful.

Bingo! The proof is (well, was) there!

As parents, we want the best for our kids. It's what THEY want and we travel land and sea to help them (if what they want is WP).

What was suppose to encourage our kids (LOA, LOE) has become a snare propaganda for us parents.

I hope we don't misdirect our kids just because we are biased one way or another.

THE BOTTOM LINE: WP has not (and most assuredly will not) publish the acceptance rates and denied rates of those who received LOE's/LOA's/none.

I think it's needless to apply the "one size fits all" approach... If you think a LOA/LOE/none helped your DS or DD... more power to you!

If you think it had no effect... more power to you...

At any rate... parents who try to make converts of other parents are wasting their time.

I am NOT boasting, but my kid received both LOE and LOA... and we were scared all the way even to the end until Feb 06. (appt day).

God bless our kids!!!

This entire argument is a waste of time because there are no set rules for when/who receives an LOE. It is up to the RC's discretion. Some may send them out as a recruiting tool. Some may send them out to encourage high quality candidates to finish their app. Some may not send any out at all. I suppose it is possible that some use it similar to an LOA (even though it does not guarantee anything). This is what makes them meaningless - there are no guarantees what the requirements for receiving one are. It is just like 3Q letters - some get them, some don't. It has NO BEARING on your admission.

Why are "so many" in the first wave LOE recipients? This is simple, because most of them have joined this forum to get some sort of feedback trying to find out if this means they/their kid has a better chance of getting in. We are no where near the 500 mark on appointments listed in this forum so assuming we have a fair distribution is like assuming the Army will never change a policy.

Do you have to put an asterisk on the 2/6 date? 😁😁😁

Why are we debating this? You aren’t going to convince a kid (or his parents) that a LOE was meaningless if following the LOE the kid received an appointment, especially an early appointment. And, you aren’t going to convince a kid (or his parents) that a LOE meant much, if anything, if the kid didn’t receive an appointment. The language of an LOE says what it says. An LOE is better than nothing but not as good as a LOA. Not all LOEs seem equal.

Now, there is also no reason to debate LOAs. I’ve seen them compared to a Golden Ticket. Hopefully, your kid doesn’t turn out to be Augustus Gloop or Veruca Salt. Their Golden Tickets didn’t do em much good. Kind of the equivalent of an LOA followed by a medical DQ and no waiver, or by no NOM.

You can NEVER go wrong with a Willy Wonka reference.

I will truly never understand the fervor over LOA / LOE. Come R-Day, none of it matters one iota.

Yes!!! Very well said. Everyone seems to be seeking any hint they can grasp onto -- any kind of affirmation that Junior is on the right track. And many are confusing coincidence with correlation with causation. And it leads to seemingly endless threads that have no clear answer (though common sense seems to take a back seat when it doesn't fit one's desired narrative).

So I'll just repeat the well-worn and widely spoken tropes, even if they're much ignored: Don't worry about what you can't control. Have a Plan B. You're in the running until you get the TWE. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Don't read too much into any one thing. The SAs have been doing it this way for decades, so trust the process.
