DS just wrote us that he has been given the option to take a course for his intended major during the first semester. I thought they declared their major during spring semester. He validated some courses and was placed in a higher level of a required course. eg. English 2, Calc 3. He did not validate out of any courses (Gov or Chem) as far as I can tell as he did not take AP Chem and had a 3 on his AP Gov exam. I thought he had more time to check out majors.

This doesn’t mean he has necessarily decided a major. Most likely, he has met with his academic counselor and has a bit of wiggle room, and is making a choice that’s still applicable and general to most majors. If he validated out of some, he has to replace the credits with something.

Don’t worry, even after a full year (maybe more), they can, on a case by case basis, change their majors. Some are an easier sell than others. But during plebe summer, he is most certainly not setting in stone the rest of his academic career. Or major.

If he is uncertain there are definitely other classes he can take. If he decides aero isn’t his thing, that course would more than likely serve as an elective down the road

If he doesn't end up as an Aero major, he can use those credits as a free elective, use them to validate a required course for another major (e.g. if he ends up as a Group 2 or Group 3, it could probably fill in for Planes), or drop them on the floor. He is in no way obligated to continue with the rest of the major and will still go through the major selection process with everyone else.

Being ahead of the matrix opens up opportunities like VGEP and semester abroad down the road and is a good place to be, so long as he can keep up with the pace. The hardest part of getting into either of those programs isn't getting good grades, it's validating or overloading a semester's worth of courses.

Just as there are MIDN who struggle to graduate, there are MIDN that walk out of that place with two majors and a minor or are halfway done with an M.S. by graduation.
