My Introduction

I do not know if they have to re-apply at USNA, but I do know that USNA does not require them to get another DoDMERB physical, they get a quick medical screening by the medical department upon return. USAFA on the other hand DOES require them to get a new DoDMERB physical. Don't know about USMA.

Once you put that uniform on you rapidly learn that all personal concerns and requirements are "subject to the good of the Service".

They can resign with no obligation until the first day of class their third year. Therefore, the Academy cannot prevent their going on the mission. The Academy could possibly deny the second appointment through a variety of reasons. However, I guess in the grand scheme of things, if they are not counted in the total quota of incoming plebes, their second MOC nomination is probably not really to the detriment of another candidate. Unless of course the MOC lists him as the primiary nomination and then it could possibly deny another candidate from that same district. Still it is a risk and the USMA recommendation of not entering the Academy until after the completion of the mission sounds like very good advice.

Yes, the mission. I am planning on serving a mission for the LDS church. It has been one of my big goals next to getting into USNA since I was little. On the website like someone previously mentioned, they allow you to leave after your second year to do that if you choose to. Then you'll be accepted back in when you come back pretty much guaranteed as long as there has been no immense changes in health conditions. Or at least that's what a midshipman I talked to said who's planning on going on a mission.

But yes it has been a concern of my parents and I haven't talked about it very in depth with my BGO. I should probably do that.

The one thing I was questioning though was that if you leave halfway through school it almost seems to me like that disrupts your college learning and since you'd be gone for two years (the average length of an LDS mission) when you come back a lot of the things you'd learned in college probably would've, been forgotten or something. Because I know that when I come back after the summer to math again, I have issues remembering some things if I'm not constantly doing it.

So I am considering possibly doing a year of college, going on my mission, and then applying. I'm not sure where that would put me though in the whole application process.

I definitely need to get some advice from my BGO. But yes, thanks for bringing that up and any more comments will be appreciated.

Also, I just remembered. I am planning on applying to all of the academies, of course my first choice of college is USNA obviously, but it's good to make sure to keep the options open. I was wondering though on what are the best colleges that NROTC is at? I was looking at some of them like UCLA, Berkeley, Harvard, Boston, and I was just wondering if anyone knew which ones are the top. I've always liked UCLA and I think that might be my top pick after USNA since the whole service academy-switching services-depends on if it can be set up and all those complications, or so I hear? Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways, let me know what you all think. I'd really appreciate it!

Aeroman - you realize these are 'fightin words' for some...But I'll weigh in on a few more. The ones you said are all good. Also consider Notre Dame and Texas A&M, Embery-Riddle, and the Univ. of Penn. I have met outstanding Military Officers in all branches of the services from these institutions.

And remember ONLY 20% of the military officers come from Service Academies -

Unless they went to NAPS, in which case the rules are a bit different. Still, you have a point: the person can resign at any time.

Still it is a risk and the USMA recommendation of not entering the Academy until after the completion of the mission sounds like very good advice.

I agree. Something to think about, for sure.

Well, I asked my BGO on the whole mission and what to do (he is also LDS) and this is what he said, "My recommendation is to go ahead and attend the Naval Academy as soon as possible and then take a leave of absence for the mission." So I believe that is what I'll do. He also gave me the email of a Mid that is at the academy right now and is planning on serving a mission that I will be corresponding with. So I will post anymore advice I get. Thank-you all again for your help.

Regards,

Aeroman
