NASS

Last year my dd received her candidate letter on the same day as her NASS acceptance letter, in late March. She had applied for NASS on 1 Feb, so for her, it was about 7 weeks.

Good luck to all the new c/o 2013 candidates and NASS attendees!

I know that this is a bit late, but good luck to all of those who are in session I!
Respectfully,
Kathleen

sorry this may be the wrong thread, but what percentage of students are usually considered candidates for the naval academy? or are all students who fill out the candidate thing online offered the chance to apply?

Hi, I applied to NASS 2008 the second day it was open (Feb. 2nd) and was lucky enough to get my acceptance letter in NASS, Feb. 14th, for Session one. I received my letter of Official Candidate for the USNA on May 16 and went to Summer Seminar May 31st. That's why I chose the name Maximus here, it was my mythical name at NASS.

For the record, there was an unusual 5th company this year, "Echo" and we were told at the small ending ceremony that at least 1/3 of our NASS group would be offered Appointments. I had the time of my life there and will do my best to win an Appointment, Go Navy!

I can echo some of your numbers but they are a bit different. My son went to NASS 2 2008. He really liked it and is going to apply. He indicated that he was told of all the kids at NASS 40% would end up going to the academy. It was not indicated what was the statistic for the other 60% ie did they apply or not apply.

I heard from two other sources that between 30-40% of the kids that go to NASS decide not to complete applications. They decided USNA was not for them. I met a Marine Officer whose daughter went to NASS 2006 and decided it was not for her. NASS is for those kids too. If its not right for you don't apply go and hope it works out, it usually does not.

Incidentially my son's squad leader ran two squads Session 1 and 2. He told my son of the total 16 kids he was only recommending 2 for admission. None from Session 1. Both my son and the Squad leader were dissappointed in the athletic ability of many of the NASS participents.

I completely agree with USNAp comment on athletic ability; many who went to NASS (I was E-4-4 session II) were not athletically able nor mentally. But I still had a great time (Sea Trials and Indoc. was TONS of FUN! :) ) and it definitely solidified my choice of wanting to go to the Naval Academy- I know for some, it changed their mind but that is just as important. Congratulations to all those who went and hopefully we'll be a part of the class of 2013! :)

A Commander that gave a speech at the end (last day with our parents there) in Alumni Hall, told us approximately 1/3 of you will be back, he did not specify why. He said that right after he announced that we had a rare "Echo" company this year. I was in Bravo 4-1, Session 1.
